Sometimes regenerative agriculture and AMP (Adaptive Multi-Paddock) grazing is viewed best from the air. This is a bird's eye view of two pastures with six paddocks each. The cattle make a large loop with a day or so in each paddock.
You can see they are currently on day 7 paddock. Its been grazed the most and they are ready to move. Paddock #8 is green and tall and ready to be grazed. However the beauty of the system is to look back at paddock #1 that has a lot of clover. Its already starting to green up and with rain and heat like we've had in July... it will be ready to graze again soon.
You see, if left unchecked, the cattle would eat that clover down to the roots and kill it all. Rotating daily keeps them from regrazing their favorite forage at the expense of long term pasture management. It also keeps them from grazing where they have dropped their manure for at least a month to prevent parasite loads. Most parasites can't live more than a few days in the sun without a same species host.
| 2 |  Got more work done on a new taller turkey tractor for this year. Weve been using one of our chicken tractors for the past couple of years but they are a little too short. This is also a bigger tractor since we're raising a few more birds this year for customers. Hard to believe that it's time for the turkeys to hit pasture to be ready for customers in time for Thanksgiving. | 181 |
| 3 |  +4A lot of people don't understand a lot of what goes into grass-fed and grass-finished beef or pastured pork. They dont know what it means to a farmer or rancher to not use herbicides on their farm. Yesterday before working my 8-5 "day job", it meant getting up at 5am to work on weedeating the miles of fence line to ensure the electric fence works for cattle and pigs. Traditional farmers would just spray the outside woth round-up (glyphosate) and thats it for most of the growing season. However, regenerative agriculture means no herbicides to drift into grass eaten by our animals. It means weedeating miles of fence every month or so during the growing season. The vows will eat up ti the fence line on the inside but the grass and vines on the outside ground out the lines and then animals get out. You want to know why regenerative farmers charge more for their products? This is one of a thousand ways they make your food safer and better for you but requires dramatically more labor than commercial farming. | 644 |

| 5 |  +4About a year ago, I planted some alfalfa as well as some clover and cover crops in a few fields to help diversity the forage types. The clover was expensive... but the alfalfa was downright criminal. I believe each 40lb bag was $180 for alfalfa seed, which is a lot for us. Well after a dry year, July has shaped up to be an anomaly in a good way... with several material rains that didnt involve tropical summer systems. As a result, the alfalfa from a year ago has started germinating in a few areas. I had given up but I guess the dry fall, winter, and spring didnt have the right moisture conditions. The cattle absolutely love it. | 339 |
| 6 |  +2The amount of glyphosate sprayed on the food we eat is insane. The first two are tobacco fields... fine... not food, but still. The last is a "round-up ready" soybean field. These are genetically modified soybeans that can be sprayed with glyphosate and not die like normal plants. Then we consume those soy products or our animals do. You are what your FOOD eats. | 417 |
| 7 |  +1Some days on a farm/homestead are celebration and some days are mourning... and some days are a bit of both, often within hours of each other. Yesterday we had a beautiful calf born and it was an easy calving by all accounts early in the morning when it was still relatively cool. This picture was while he was napping within the first hour after birth. The cow is a good mother and was very attentive staying close to the calf but it was never able to stand up and passed within a couple of hours of being born. We believe there was likely a congenital heart problem because it seemed to be breathing fine. Just goes to show that not everything is picturesque on a homestead. Like a farmer once told me years ago.. if you're going to have livestock... youre going to have dead stock unfortunately. | 413 |
| 8 |  +1We just received another 200 meat birds for customers. One brooder wasnt enough, so we split the chicks across two. I really like these ceramic heaters vs using heat lamps. They pull a lot less current and dont pose fire dangers. We should be processing another batch soon thats reached maturity. | 9 |  +5We cut some more lumber up recently by having a guy with a mobile saw mill come and help. Scroll to the bottom to see the video. We paid him for his time and the saw mill and we did the labor of loading the logs and stacking the rough cut lumber. So far, we have tens of thousands of dollars of rough cut pine and Cyprus lumber stacked up for future building projects and about $800 in total cost to have this person cut it up for us. This time around, we onky cut Cyprus and you can see we have a lot left still.

| 11 |  +1Even with the intense heat lately, this wasnt a bad view for the afternoon golden hour. The way the sun was setting on both the beef herd and the sunflowers in the garden were both really nice. The grass and especially the clover has started wilting in the pastures due to the heat and dry weather. We have a chance of rain this afternoon and a better chance tomorrow. If we can keep getting these shots of rain, even if its not a ton... it can get us through the 101°F days without too much pasture damage. Adaptive Multi-Paddock (AMP) grazing requires daily movement to a new space. The rain allows us to feed pasture instead of hay in thes dry times. | 888 |
| 12 |  Yesterday was a scorcher at 100°F and a heat index of 112°F, so we set up a misting station for the cows to hang out by. I couldnt set it up in the paddock itself because i move the cows daily and they'd knock it over trying scratch and rub against the tripod, so I rigged the tripod temporarily on an H brace. I realize its super redneck, but it was a way to provide a little relief for them in this heat. What other ways are you guys cooling off your animals out on pasture? | 475 |
| 13 |  +1Rotational grazing like standard ranchers do is NOT the same as AMP grazing like we do. A few days ago, I continued to move the cattle through their new pasture. Dry weather is tough as the grass our pastures still hasnt rebounded from the rain last week. The cows crushed oir neighbor's centipede grass as they moved through in the first picture. In the aerial picture you can see how the cattle moved through the paddocks in a counter clockwise rotation.
The concept of AMP grazing (Adaptive Multi-Paddock) is central to regenerative agriculture methods. You can see 9 paddocks that the cattle get moved across in 9 days. The cattle cant go back and visit a prior space where they liked the forage better or deposit more manure in one area than another in that field. Each paddock gets one day of intensive grazing, and then 30 days of rest and regrowth. AMP grazing is highly structured, requires daily human planning and movement, and regenerates soil dramatically better/faster than traditional "pasture rotation". | 2 355 |

I dont actually remember hitting 102°F ever and then you add in the heat index, we'll be at 112°F. We will have to be out spraying cattle with water to try to get them through the hottest parts of the days as this is brutal. | 310 |
| 15 |  +2Its amazing what a little rain will do for the garden. Its perked right up. The Swiss Chard and cabbage are going strong now, there are small peppers on our plants, the bibb lettuce is doing well, and the tomatoes are shooting up. Praise God for the rain! | 2 110 |
| 16 |  +1Weve recently had dome rain in Eastern NC, which has been an absolute blessing. Still way behind for the year, but just getting some relief has helped dramatically in the short term. Even our livestock guardian dogs were happy to stand in the rain just to get wet vs going in their shelters. We had 2.25" in about 48 hours last week and then a day later we received another quarter inch in a pop up storm. You can see standing water in the pasture in the first picture but its all been soaked up by the second picture the next day. The organics weve been adding in the way of composted manure is definitely helping to reduce the standing water and runoff. Heavy storms used to pool up and stand for days or run straight into ditches due to the hard packed clay and sand in the pastures but slowly thats changing. The soils are holding more now and soaking in faster. The grass is staying green a little longer. Its incredible to watch. | 515 |
| 17 |  We continue to rotate our beef herd through the newly fenced pasture using our normal adaptive multi-paddock (AMP) grazing where the herd spends 12-24 hours in a paddock before moving to the next paddock. Im amazed at what they clean up compared to our dairy cattle. You can see this green strip in a paddock that they just grazed is crushed in 12 hours. It was full of ragweed and other typical "weeds". However the cattle find the young versions of these weeds very palatable vs when the plant gets tall and woody.
Did you know that common ragweed has 10-12% crude protein, has 67% total digestible nutrients (better than many late season grasses), and has a deep root system capable of bringing up phosphorus and other minerals to serve as a natural supplement for cattle? Ragweed is surprisingly a good forage for many cattle during the summer because its toot system allows it to be drought tolerant compared to grasses.
Im not suggesting anyone go plant ragweed, but this is where wholesale spraying misses the mark. | 370 |
| 18 |  +2Purchased a feeder to try out for the pigs. Its a small one but if it works, I may invest in a bigger one. These Osborne feeders (in theory) should prevent us from wasting as much food as the pigs self serve and don't dump as much on the ground. The feeder has a paddle that the pigs push with their nose that allows food to drop from the hopper. In theory it should keep the feed dry and waste a lot less. It should also save time as we can feed our pigs less frequently in bulk vs smaller daily rations.
I hear these are common out west where more pastured pig operations like ours are. However around here, you cant find any of these used and they are super expensive. One farmer I know drives from NC out to Iowa to pick up big versions of these in bulk. Obviously we can't pull that off being a small operation.
Anyone here use these or know a good source for used ones on the east coast? The larger ones are made of galvanized steel vs fiberglass like this one. | 531 |
| 19 |  +2The other day I top dressed the field were planting pumpkins for the fall in. Because pumpkins are such resource hogs, I used the manure spreader to put down composted horse manure thats been sitting for a year. The rich black compost contrast to the gray soil is stark. This farm was an over 200 year old crop farm until 3 years ago. The process is slow to regenerate the soil with animals but you can see the difference. I can already tell a difference in parts of the pastures that weve had animals in and have spread manure, and how much water they hold vs how much puddles up and runs off. | 20 |  Our recent loss of our lawn mower (saving for repairs) and discovery that our dairy cows can mow our yard for us has spurned a whole new set of ideas 💡
We have a back portion of our property that was logged over 2 years ago and needs to cleared/cleaned up. We started with one small test area and the cows did great. You can see what they did in the drone shot in the first picture. They cleared the test paddock #1. Now I need to bush hog and clear a perimeter with the tractor so they can create the two addional paddocks (2 &3) for the future. Since this was logged, there are stumps and trees I'll need to work around or move with the grapple on the tractor to get a perimeter fence set up. Then the cows can eat it down. I had no idea cows would eat poison ivy and Virginia creeper like candy. Lol | 520 |
