The hymn "Praise, my soul, the King of heaven", sung in our church last Sunday, was written in 1834 by Anglican priest Henry Francis Lyte, and it is a poetic paraphrase of Psalm 103. Lyte, who was physically frail but strong in faith, intended it as a personal reflection on God's unending grace, mercy, and faithfulness. The magnificent tune most commonly sung today, titled "Praise, My Soul," was composed by John Goss in 1868. The hymn famously gained major public attention when it was sung at the 1947 wedding of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, and later at her funeral in 2022.

As many of you will know, the Community of Sant’Egidio has been working in Moscow for over 20 years, bringing relief to the homeless. Every Summer, the community invites some of their homeless friends to spend a weekend at a retreat house. These weekends — weekends of solidarity — give them a chance to feel truly human again, to breathe out, and to find the strength to continue their very difficult lives. Funds are always short in these difficult times, but if you would like to consider donating to Sant’Egidio towards this excellent cause, you can do so, by using this link.

The famous hymn "Amazing Grace," sung by the congregation last Sunday, was written in 1772 by John Newton, a former slave ship captain who survived a violent sea storm. Struck by a spiritual conversion, he left the slave trade, became an Anglican parish priest, and spent the rest of his life fighting to abolish the slavery. He wrote the lyrics of the song to illustrate a sermon on God's mercy, and to this day it remains a universal anthem of redemption. The melody we associate with "Amazing Grace" did not appear until 1835, decades after Newton's death. It was called "New Britain," a traditional folk tune from the Appalachian Mountains in America. The hymn was heavily popularized during the Second Great Awakening in the U.S. in the early 19th century. In the 20th century, the song evolved into a powerful anthem for the civil rights movement and anti-war protests, and was immortalized by artists like Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, Johnny Cash, and countless others. The words of this hymn are so powerful because we have all been lost. We have all been blind. We have all needed a grace we did not deserve. And they give us hope that the same grace that once saved a slave trader can save anyone.

Remembering our Sunday service — full of beautiful singing, children's laughter, meeting old friends, and finding ourselves on the pages of the Bible and rejoicing in one another. You can find Fr Arun's uplifting sermon on our website, and the recording of the service is already on our YouTube channel

The speaker on the Church of England’s “Everyday Faith” app this week is our very own Olga Fabrikantova! Everyday Faith is an app with daily Bible readings, reflections and prayers and you can find more about it here. For those of you who don’t remember Olga, she was the first of a distinguished group of members of our congregation who have gone forward for ordination. She now teaches theology at Ridley Hall, Cambridge, which she somehow manages to juggle with bringing up her two young sons with her husband Simeon.

During last Sunday's service, our choir sang "Kum ba yah" — an African American spiritual rooted in the Gullah culture of the descendants of West and Central Africans and Native Americans who were enslaved on plantations on the coastal islands of South Carolina and Georgia in the US. Originally a soulful plea for divine intervention during the Jim Crow era, its title translates to "Come by here." First recorded in 1926, the song re-emerged during the folk music boom of the 1950s and 1960s, popularized by artists like Joan Baez. It became very popular to sing around summer campfires. Later, it was transformed into an anthem of strength and peaceful resistance, often sung by activists and congregations during the 1960s civil rights movement.
