It is indeed true that crime, particularly among the youth, is one of the major issues much of the world is finding it difficult to deal with. The causes of this appear to stem two factors, while several remedies appear to be open to us. Perhaps one of the main reasons here is poverty. Countries with high rates of economic deprivation tend to experience higher rates of crime compared with other countries. Since people do not have the means to make a living in the right ways, they often have no choice but to turn to criminal activities, as not only are they an easy way to get what they want, but do not require prerequisite talents. Another factor might be peer pressure, which plays a significant role in the lives of almost all teenagers and young adults. There may be the times in which people tend to look up to their friends and believe that what they do is the right thing to do. Turning to possible solutions, an obvious step would be to help people lift out of poverty by creating employment opportunities for young people. Although public budgets are under pressure in some crime-stricken countries, if we took this step, it would enhance access to job for people on low incomes, which means that people can be discouraged from committing a crime. A further solution may fall on parents’ shoulders. If parents were to teach their children from a very early age to respect the rules and the laws of a country, their children are less likely to involve in any kind of criminal activity. In summary, the factors of living in poverty-stricken families and peer pressure seem to be the main causes. A coordinated response by both the state and parents may well lessen the severity of the situation.
