Good idea : Solar powered fridge https://www.yankodesign.com/2024/05/21/solar-powered-fridge-doesnt-require-electricity-and-can-run-for-40-hours-without-power/ Amped Innovation is rolling out the EasyFreeze across more than a dozen countries in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia, focusing on communities that are hardest to reach. Small businesses, such as corner stores, benefit immensely from the ability to sell cold beverages and ice, while medical clinics and hospitals can safely store medicines and vaccines at precise temperatures. The fridge’s design prioritizes off-grid efficiency, with proprietary circuits, software, and mechanical designs to deliver city-like performance in rural settings. One of the distinguishing features of the EasyFreeze is its durability. Unlike many other solar refrigerators that fail within a year of use, the EasyFreeze is built to last. The equipment is assembled locally to avoid steep import fees and reduce costs, ensuring affordability without compromising on quality. This holistic approach to product design and distribution makes EasyFreeze not only efficient but also economically viable.

Solar-Powered Fridge Doesn’t Require Electricity And Can Run For 40 Hours Without Power

In the privileged corners of the world, it’s easy to take for granted the amenities that define modern life—consistent electricity, reliable refrigeration, and an abundance of technological conveniences. However, a significant portion of the global population struggles to access what many consider basic necessities. This disparity underscores a broader issue: our comforts, powered by unsustainable practices, contribute to long-term environmental degradation. EasyFreeze finds a good balance between the two, embracing more sustainable alternatives, which is not just a nod to the past but a necessary step toward a viable future.

Good idea: Stand up for justice As a clarification: Do get angry at assholes, for purposefully distributing bullshit. Do get angry at people purposefully being provocative, using hostile communication strategies etc. Use this as a tool to see where you have to refine your knowledge. Do not let shitty people waltz over you. Be an equanimous jedi

Good Idea: Reflect your opinions https://fs.blog/bertrand-russell-on-avoiding-foolish-opinions/
"If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. The most savage controversies are those about matters as to which there is no good evidence either way."

Good idea: Build DIY Solar Energy https://anarchosolarpunk.substack.com/p/offgridsolar Cheaper, more powerful and modular so you can scale things up or down. All it takes is some basic tools, a little safety knowledge and to know the ingredients to put it all together. A DIY system means more interoperability because there isn’t one point of failure like a Jackery. ✨sunday read

Good Idea: Open Science https://www.vox.com/the-highlight/2019/6/3/18271538/open-access-elsevier-california-sci-hub-academic-paywalls Open science aims to make scientific research freely accessible to everyone, promoting greater knowledge sharing and faster scientific progress. Individuals can support open science legally by advocating for open access policies at their institutions, using and contributing to open access platforms, and discussing the importance of open access with policymakers. While piracy sites like Sci-Hub provide access to paywalled research, making vast amounts of scientific knowledge available to those who can't afford expensive journal subscriptions, they aren't a sustainable (legal) solution. However, this widespread access highlights the demand for open access and pressures publishers to change their models. Ultimately, focusing on legal actions helps build a more equitable and lasting system for accessing scientific knowledge. 🫶 to @nvrwalkalone for the link!

Good Idea: Tegelwippen (Tile whipping) https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/apr/04/we-need-to-accept-the-weeds-dutch-towns-compete-to-remove-the-most-garden-paving In the Netherlands, there's a fun competition called "tile whipping" where cities and towns compete to remove the most paving stones from gardens (and public spaces...😜) to replace them with green spaces. This initiative started during the COVID-19 pandemic to encourage people to make their surroundings greener and more sustainable. Removing tiles helps with rainwater drainage, reduces heat, and promotes biodiversity. Cities like Venlo, Amersfoort, and Rotterdam are leading the effort, and participants are transforming them into lush, green areas...

Good Idea: imagine Utopia and plot ways to get there https://solarpunkmagazine.com/how-to-tell-if-the-future-youre-building-is-utopian/ Here are some practical ways to determine if the future society you envision is truly utopian. It emphasizes that a utopia should be inclusive, safe, and equitable, and must balance technology and nature harmoniously. Key points include: Inclusivity: A utopian society must welcome and support all people, regardless of disabilities, race, or sexual orientation. Safety: It should provide a safe environment, free from discrimination and violence, especially for marginalized groups. Leadership: True change should be led by marginalized communities, not by those who benefit from the current system. Technology and Nature: Harmony between technology, humanity, and nature is essential, avoiding exploitative practices. Resource Distribution: An equitable distribution of resources, ensuring everyone's basic needs and comforts are met. 🙏 to @klimadeswandels for the image

Good idea: Learn the history of pre-capitalism work https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvk_XylEmLo (15min on 2x speed, watch at work 😜) Most agree that working long hours is exhausting. But it wasn't always that way. Learning how our ancestors worked before the introduction of mechanical clocks, might inform us on how we can improve living conditions for many. Do we choose to collectively bargain for it? 🙏to this subscriber submission

Good idea: solar power to smelt metal https://www.ecowatch.com/solar-power-heat-metal-smelting-cement-quartz.html Industrial processes like smelting metals or manufacturing cement can be carbon-intensive, as they typically rely on fossil fuels to generate enough energy to produce high temperatures. But researchers have found a way to use solar thermal trapping, rather than fossil fuels, to reduce the emissions of some industrial processes. Scientists used semitransparent materials, including synthetic quartz, to capture sunlight with a thermal trapping effect. The team connected a synthetic quartz rod, partially lined with platinum, to an opaque silicon carbide disk, which would absorb the sunlight, and exposed one end of the quartz rod to concentrated solar radiation.
