Updating the General Strike for the 21st Century🏴 https://cwc.im/TwoGeneralStrikes What would a general strike look like today? In this history, we compare the last two general strikes in the US—both in Oakland, in 1946 and 2011. Looking at the strikes of the 1940s, we can see that any combative labor resistance that breaks out today will likely emerge in defiance of union leadership rather than because of it. Looking at the general strike of 2011, we can see that to succeed, combative organizing must begin outside the workplace as well as within it, connecting the struggles of the unemployed and precarious with those of the employed. Exploring how the strategies that people experimented with in 2011 over the decade since, we draw up new proposals about what to bring to tomorrow’s uprisings. As it has become increasingly difficult for workers to exert leverage on employers on a workplace-by-workplace basis, the general strike might represent a way to wield power against the capitalist class as a whole.

When we made this poster celebrating the George Floyd Rebellion, there was a lot of concern about how the arson of this housing development would impact people in Minneapolis. https://crimethinc.com/posters/a-new-world Here's a photograph of the development, which was completed despite the fire. Meanwhile, the Third Precinct—pictured here—remains a burnt-out husk. A tremendous amount of work remains ahead of us to build a new world free of police, white supremacy, and capitalism in the ashes of the old. But let's not be afraid of transformative change, even when it's messy.

Today, we remember the events of May 28, 2020—when people in Minneapolis, mourning George Floyd, honored his memory by showing the power of uncompromising collective resistance. https://cwc.im/ThirdPrecinct The same forms of oppression remain. Let's keep fighting them together. 🏴

The police exist to protect the wealthy—and themselves. As disparities in wealth and power increase, cops protect fewer and fewer people. The gulf between the wealthy and the poor has steadily increased for decades now alongside desperation, gun violence, and police shootings. There is no safety without self-determination. To be safe, we have to be the ones who define what counts as safety, and we have to have the power to shape the conditions of our lives. To put an end to gun violence, we have to abolish the disparities that characterize our society. We can begin by supporting student protesters on their own terms and asking what a direct action campaign targeting gun industry profiteers might look like.

Their Guns Won’t Protect You, but They Can Get You Killed https://cwc.im/TheirGuns Neither Republican calls for more guns and policing nor Democrat demands for more gun control will put an end to the epidemic of mass shootings in the United States. The problem runs deeper. The function of police is not to protect, but to control. It is not to prevent crises, but to determine who suffers in them. The footage of police in Uvalde physically restraining parents while their children were murdered speaks volumes. Militarizing police has not stopped mass shootings. On the contrary, flooding our society with even more weapons will only increase the number of killings, whether by on-duty police, off-duty police, or others who have access to their guns. Democrats are calling for more gun control. But who would enforce stricter gun laws? The police, of course. And they would enforce those laws just as selectively, and with just as much racism and violence, as they enforce all the other laws on the books.

After cops murdered George Floyd, the Minneapolis police lost legitimacy. But new organizations took their place, using the language of abolition to justify their role as “the community policing itself.” Last year, Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey worked with one of those "community policing" groups to evict George Floyd Square. This year, one of those groups protected the mayor so he could show up at George Floyd Square to an event honoring George Floyd. Instead of police abolition, we get policing augmented by "community policing," all in the service of the ruling class. About the ways that the authorities have sought to disguise new forms of policing as "police abolition": https://cwc.im/AbolishMPD About the first attempt to evict George Floyd Square in 2021: https://cwc.im/GeorgeFloydSquare

At long last, we've added Days of War, Nights of Love and the Contradictionary back to our online store! If you missed the kickstarter, you can order them here: https://store.crimethinc.com/ Days of War, Nights of Love was the first book we published—our flagship introduction to anarchism for anyone who desires a life of passion and revolt. The Contradictionary is a lexicon of words in revolt—a serious work of lighthearted literature, it concentrates a wealth of ideas and history into aphorisms and anecdotes. Thanks so much to everyone who helped us to reprint these books! 🖤

“Some components of a coherent and efficient defense: •Hold decisive terrain. Reeves Young and Blackhall hope to destroy a particular area of forest. By preventing them from easily operating in this location, making it difficult to survey it and dangerous to leave equipment there, a defense strategy can severely limit their ability to accomplish this. •Attrition. Recognizing this terrain as the defensive position, forest defenders could drag Reeves Young, local police, or other adversarial forces into narrowly focused and labor-intensive conflicts, games of “cat and mouse,” and other expensive and unrewarding engagements. For now, the defenders possess an advantage in this regard, because the terrain itself can be prepared to frustrate the efforts, ease of movement, visibility, or general operating capacity of the attacker. The more the adversary has to surveil and plan around the defenders, the less they can focus on destroying the forest. •Disruption: Forest defenders can limit the ability of the adversary to attack according to coherent or synchronized schedules or timelines. Defenders have the privilege of selective engagement—they can engage when and how they please, according to inclination or opportunity, putting the attackers in a state of uncertainty. •Preparation. The primary purpose of defense is to open space for offense. Forest defenders can carry out stationary or mobile operations; they can engage or escape; they can disrupt, sabotage, confuse, or misdirect the developers. The chief goal is to force the developers to proceed in a clumsy and confused manner both logistically and politically. Defense cannot substitute for offense, but it is a necessary aspect of all fights.” https://crimethinc.com/2022/04/11/the-city-in-the-forest-reinventing-resistance-for-an-age-of-ecological-collapse-and-police-militarization
