"CHRONIC SOFT SHELL SYNDROME IN SHRIMP CULTURE" The loose shell syndrome is an important disease in shrimp culture systems in India causing significant economic losses. The soft shell syndrome is the result of nutritional deficiencies, stresses like bloom crash, exposure to chemical pesticides, poor pond soil and water quality and is highly correlated with the poor management practices in ponds. Lack of systematic supplementary feeding of shrimp in culture ponds is also a reason for the occurrence of loose shell syndrome in the culture ponds in the reported area. Climate changes and the aged ponds with high stocking densities in summer season is prone to loose shell syndrome. The affected shrimp have a paper-like carapace with a gap between muscle tissues. The affected shrimp lose weight and turn into a soft leathery shell. Significant reduction in growth rate was observed during the culture period. "Prevention" a) Best management practices will help in preventing the loose shell syndrome in culture ponds. b) Supplementary feeds with mineral supplementation also help to prevent the problem in culture system c) Management of good water quality parameters in the pond water will help to prevent loose shell syndrome in the culture systems.
