There's an old story about this painting or, more specifically, the piece of music inspired by it. When Sergei Rachmaninoff saw a black and white print of it, he was so moved by it that it inspired him to compose a symphonic poem of the same name. Many years later, he saw it in a museum and was deeply disappointed, as he felt that the color detracted from its mystery.
