My accent practice today and a draft for the new exercise for the community. Stay tuned, I’ll publish it today. I’ve had sooo many AHA-moments in the last months of the training. I would love for you to experience them too. Apply to join a new American Accent Group here. In this audio, I’m practicing the following: - long [u:] in “do” - “d” and “s” at the end of words - glottal catches for “T” - thought chunking - pitch - melodic patterns - pausing - short “a” - voicing “s” when necessary - diphthong “oh”

Listen to this ⬆️ if you relate to what you see below: “I know what I’m feeling but I don’t know how to express my emotions in English. When I express my authentic self (at least that’s what I think I’m doing), I get judged for my ability to connect and even speak English. My words create distance instead of connection, and I feel even more alone. Maybe I should learn more words to express emotions correctly? But the more I think about my words, the more I feel stuck, the more I want to shut down rather than continue trying to express myself.”

Did you guys see the new episode of the synchronization exercise?

The second part of the exercise. Do the same thing. First, listen to it without the subtitles. The video has 106 words. How many were YOU able to hear?

Check your listening skills. HOW TO DO THE EXERCISE: 1. Watch the video in the carousel ➡️ and write down every word that you hear 2. Only then swipe ➡️ to see the video with the subtitles. 3. Count how many words you missed. This is your real result. 3. Watch the video with the subs and make sure you can HEAR every word that you SEE. 4. Watch it again 5. Enjoy the result. You're going to hear a lot more than when you watched it the first time. If you can understand this video, you will understand any movie with Matthew McConaughey (swipe to see an example➡️) Feedback from reality is necessary to make progress. If you can hear everything, then you have no problem writing it down. If you think you can understand everything, but you can't communicate what you understand, then it's time to go back to practice. Do the synchronization exercise regularly, and you will notice an improvement. If you swipe ➡️, you will see my result. I did this exercise myself before posting it here. The video has 472 words, and I heard all 472. Even 7 years ago it would have been impossible. 7 years ago I was already a qualified teacher and I was supposed to have great listening skills. The Southern American accent used to sound like a string of unrecognizable sounds to me. Today, I can clearly hear every word in ANY accent. I practice to get better myself. And I openly share what I do with people who also want to step up their game. The most pathetic thing I've seen in my life is people who used to be great at something trying to teach others how to be great. I don't want to learn from people who used to be great. I don't want to learn from English teachers who used to grind but stopped mastering their skills because "they have no time". To help others get better, I need to continuously get better myself. When I got my degree, my English sucked, even though I was one of the most exceptional students the university had ever seen. I couldn't understand half of what people said to me in English. I had to change that because no one was there to teach me to meet my own standards. Now I know it's possible. You can do it too. Go do the exercise.
