An Introduction to Hong Kong
The Dual Identity of the Pearl of the Orient
Hong Kong sits on the eastern side of the Pearl River estuary, backed by mainland China and facing the South China Sea, a cosmopolitan hub where Chinese and Western cultures meet. It came under British rule after 1842 and returned to China in 1997 under the “one country, two systems” framework. That distinctive history gives the city Eastern roots with Western branches.
A City That Grows Upward
With plenty of mountains and little flat land, Hong Kong has had to claim its space from the sky. Skyscrapers in Central rise sharply along the hillside, and every night the lights on both sides of Victoria Harbour put on the “Symphony of Lights.” From Victoria Peak, dense towers and the blue harbor together form the city’s most iconic view.
Everyday Life in a Cha Chaan Teng
Hong Kong moves at a startling pace, yet always keeps a seat at the cha chaan teng for itself. Silk-stocking milk tea, pineapple buns, egg tarts, and wonton noodles are the flavor memories of generation after generation. Neon signs and street-side food stalls on old streets keep this financial center rooted in warm, everyday life.
Martial Arts, Cinema, and Pop Culture
From Jin Yong’s martial arts novels to Wong Kar-wai’s visual poetry, from Shaw Brothers films to Cantopop, Hong Kong was once the great exporter of Chinese-language pop culture, with influence reaching Chinese communities around the world.
In Closing
Hong Kong’s charm lies in compressing East and West, tradition and modernity, skyscrapers and back streets into one small territory: crowded yet full of energy, hurried yet warm. #

An Introduction to the Bund, Shanghai
A Century-Old Skyline of International Architecture
The Bund stretches roughly 1.5 kilometers along the western bank of the Huangpu River and once served as the financial core of Shanghai's foreign trade in the modern era. Fifty-two historic buildings—including the HSBC Building, the Customs House, and the Peace Hotel—line the waterfront, blending Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical styles into what's often called an "exhibition of world architecture."
A Dialogue Across the River
Facing the Bund across the water, Lujiazui's Oriental Pearl Tower and three skyscrapers rise into the sky. As night falls, the warm glow of the old buildings reflects against the dazzling neon of the opposite bank—a single river separating two banks, encapsulating a century of Shanghai's transformation from colonial trading post to global metropolis.
Customs House Chimes and the "Lovers' Wall"
The Customs House bell once marked the hours for old Shanghai residents and still chimes on schedule today. The riverside promenade, nicknamed the "Lovers' Wall," was once a classic courting spot for generations of Shanghainese and remains a favorite place for locals to stroll and cool off.
In Closing
The Bund's charm lies in being more than just scenery—it's living history standing by the river, where the echoes of an old era and the ambitions of a new one face each other across the water, never truly distant.

An Introduction to Nanjing
A City of Dual Character Across Ten Dynasties
Nanjing has long been described as a city where "tigers crouch and dragons coil"—the Yangtze River's natural barrier and the dragon-like ridge of Purple Mountain gave it an innate air of imperial grandeur. Ten dynasties made it their capital over the centuries, yet the city was also repeatedly devastated by war. This recurring cycle of rise and ruin gives Nanjing a somber, tragic beauty that sets it apart from other ancient capitals.
Xuanwu Lake and Jiming Temple
Xuanwu Lake is the largest surviving royal garden lake in the Jiangnan region, its scenery still carrying echoes of the misty dreams of the Six Dynasties era. At Jiming Temple, cherry blossoms bloom against red walls each spring, drawing crowds to this rare pocket of quiet within the bustling city, its morning bells and evening drums lending a touch of Zen stillness.
The Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall
The Memorial Hall for the Victims of the Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders stands quietly on the city's western edge, its historical records and artifacts preserving the city's heaviest chapter of memory. Each year on National Memorial Day, sirens sound across the entire city, a solemn reminder never to forget.
Nanjing's Straightforward Character and Everyday Flavors
Nanjing locals are known for speaking plainly and directly, with a down-to-earth, almost stubbornly honest character often likened to a "big radish." Salted duck is rich but never greasy, duck blood and vermicelli soup is warm and savory, and sweet treats like taro in syrup and osmanthus-stuffed lotus root offer the city's most humble, everyday sweetness.
In Closing
Nanjing's charm lies in how openly it holds both imperial glory and the pain of war—carrying the grandeur of a dragon-coiled mountain alongside the warmth of its ordinary back streets. #

Guilin
In the northeastern part of China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the Li River winds like a ribbon of jade through hundreds of karst peaks rising sharply from the earth—this is Guilin. The saying "Guilin's landscape is the finest under heaven" has circulated for nearly a thousand years, and it remains, even now, the ultimate image many people conjure when they imagine classical Chinese scenery. The view here needs no embellishment—mountains are simply mountains, water simply water—and yet together they form something that feels almost beyond reality.
The Marvel of Karst Landscape
Guilin's mountains are unlike any typical mountain range. Rather than forming a continuous ridge, they rise individually, straight up from flat ground, each with its own distinct shape—some resembling a brush rack, others a reclining elephant, still others a camel carrying its load. This unusual landscape formed over hundreds of millions of years as flowing water gradually dissolved and sculpted the limestone bedrock, a process geologists refer to as "peak forest" and "peak cluster" topography. Elephant Trunk Hill is one of Guilin's most iconic landmarks, where a natural rock formation and its reflection combine to form the perfect silhouette of an elephant bowing to drink—so precise it's almost hard to believe nature alone created it.
The Li River: A Flowing Ink-Wash Painting
The stretch of the Li River between Guilin and Yangshuo is often called the "hundred-mile gallery." Drifting downstream on a bamboo raft, one strange peak after another slips past on either bank, while bamboo groves, fishing villages, water buffalo, and women washing clothes by the riverbank make up scenes of the simplest kind of daily life. The water runs clear to the bottom, sparkling on sunny days and fading into misty silhouettes when the rain rolls in, like an ink-wash scroll painting that has never quite finished drying. The scenery on the back of China's 20-yuan banknote was in fact drawn from a section of the Li River near Yellow Cloth Shoal, giving this stretch of river an added layer of shared national memory.
Yangshuo: A Slower, More Bohemian Enclave
Although administratively part of Guilin, Yangshuo has developed an entirely different character of its own. Along West Street, cafés and bars sit interspersed among traditional arcaded buildings, as travelers from around the world come to cycle, rock climb, and explore caves, soaking in a relaxed atmosphere somewhere between urban comfort and untamed wilderness. The pastoral scenery of the Ten-Mile Gallery and the leisurely bamboo rafting along the Yulong River are part of why so many people end up staying in Yangshuo for days, sometimes even weeks.
A Tapestry of Ethnic Cultures
Guilin and its surrounding areas are home to a mix of ethnic groups including the Zhuang, Yao, Miao, and Dong peoples. The Longji Rice Terraces stand as a testament to the ingenuity of Zhuang and Yao ancestors—layer upon layer of terraced fields spiraling up the mountainside, shimmering with reflected water during spring irrigation and rippling in golden waves at autumn harvest, a model of harmony between agricultural civili #广西 #桂林 #山水

Chengdu: A City You Never Want to Leave
Deep in a basin in southwestern China lies a city wrapped in the aroma of street food and an unhurried pace of life—Chengdu. There's none of the rush found in coastal metropolises here, but instead the quiet confidence of a city that has kept the same name and the same location for over two thousand years. From the Jinsha ruins of the ancient Shu civilization to today's streets where office towers stand beside teahouses, Chengdu has stubbornly, gracefully remained itself.
A Philosophy of Slowing Down
For the people of Chengdu, "slow" is almost a way of life. In People's Park at dawn, old tea drinkers cradle their lidded bowls and settle in for the whole morning; deep in the alleyways, the tuning forks of ear-cleaning craftsmen ring out, forming the city's distinctive soundtrack. The clack of mahjong tiles, the clink of teacups, and the long, unhurried drawl of the local dialect all weave together into Chengdu's own urban symphony. This slowness isn't laziness—it's a quiet wisdom about how to truly inhabit one's own life.
A Culinary World of Its Own
If Sichuan is the boldest brushstroke on China's culinary map, Chengdu is the very tip of that brush. Here, "numbing" and "spicy" aren't just sensory jolts—they form an entire, precise system of flavor profiles: fish-fragrant, strange-flavor, home-style, mala, scorched-chili, and more, each one refined over generations of chefs. Dan dan noodles, mapo tofu, couple's beef offal, and skewered hot pot may look like humble street snacks, but each hides a careful balance of heat and seasoning. And in the steam rising from late-night hot pot stalls on the sidewalk, you'll find Chengdu people's most direct expression of their love for life.
A City That Shares Its Home with Pandas
Chengdu is the ancestral home of the giant panda. At the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, visitors can watch these beloved, endearingly clumsy creatures munch on bamboo and tumble around at close range. The panda has long since become more than just a species here—it's a kind of symbol for the city's own gentle, easygoing character: never pushy, yet impossible to resist.
Where Tradition and Modernity Coexist
The gray brick and tiled roofs of Kuanzhai Alley tell the stories of old Chengdu, and the ancient cypress trees at Wuhou Shrine remain evergreen, while not far away, at Taikoo Li, international fashion brands sit alongside local designer labels as young people wander through with bubble tea in hand. This is what makes Chengdu unique: it has never needed to choose between tradition and modernity—the two simply coexist here, each making the other richer.
In Closing
Chengdu's charm has never really lived in any single famous landmark—it lives in the sense of ease it offers every visitor. This is a city that lets you do absolutely nothing, just sit in a teahouse and soak up the sun; it's also a city that lets you share a late-night hot pot with a total stranger on the street. As the well-worn saying goes: Chengdu is a city you come to, and never want to leave.

Chongqing, located in southwestern China at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers, is a city that truly earns its nickname, "the Mountain City." Built into the hillsides, its roads twist and climb, and its buildings stack upon one another in dizzying layers — giving rise to the famous spectacle of a light rail line passing straight through a residential building at Liziba Station, now a must-see stop for visitors from around the world.
The rugged terrain has shaped a transportation style all its own: flat ground is a rarity here, and local taxi drivers have mastered the art of navigating steep slopes and hairpin turns. The cable cars that once carried commuters across the rivers each day have since become a beloved sightseeing experience, offering passengers a sweeping view of the twin rivers glittering at night.
Food is another defining feature of Chongqing's identity. Its fiery hotpot, simmering with beef tallow, Sichuan peppercorns, and chili, has a long and storied history — sharing a bubbling pot with friends is one of the most vivid expressions of local life. Beyond hotpot, dishes like Chongqing noodles, hot and sour rice noodles, and rustic "river-and-lake" cuisine are equally impossible to resist.
Chongqing truly comes alive after dark. The stilted wooden structures of Hongyadong cling to the hillside, ablaze with lights and stacked like a palace suspended in mid-air, while the glow of the city skyline reflects off the water where the two rivers meet, conjuring scenes worthy of a cyberpunk film. Shrouded in mist by day and radiant with light by night, Chongqing is a city where the ancient and the modern blend into something wonderfully, distinctly its own.

Shenzhen: From Fishing Village to Metropolis — A City Written in Speed
Shenzhen, a young city in southern China bordering Hong Kong, has transformed from a small fishing village into a global metropolis in just over four decades. Designated in 1980 as China's first Special Economic Zone, it became a testing ground and showcase for the country's reform and opening-up policies. Today, the city is home to soaring skylines and a dense cluster of innovative enterprises — tech giants like Huawei, Tencent, and DJI were either founded or are headquartered here, earning Shenzhen the nickname "China's Silicon Valley."
It's also an unusual city — most of its residents aren't originally from here. There are no ancestral homes, no old neighbors who've known each other for generations. And yet, in just over four decades, waves of young migrants have built an entirely new urban culture and collective memory from scratch.
"Time is Money, Efficiency is Life"
In the 1980s, the construction of the Shenzhen International Trade Center set a record — one floor completed every three days. A slogan painted on the construction site, later blown up into a massive billboard along Shennan Boulevard, became the city's unofficial motto: "Time is money, efficiency is life." Older residents recall that in those years, the entire city felt wound up like a spring, racing against the clock. The tower is no longer Shenzhen's tallest, but the slogan still reminds passersby exactly how this city was built.
A Gaze from Lotus Hill
At the summit of Lianhua (Lotus Hill) Park stands a bronze statue of Deng Xiaoping, facing the city center, overlooking what was once mudflats and is now a forest of skyscrapers. Every year, many longtime residents — especially the original generation of builders — come here to lay flowers. They say that from the hilltop, you can trace the path of your own life alongside the city's growth. It's a distinctly Shenzhen kind of nostalgia: not for a hometown left behind, but for a city they helped build with their own hands.
Dafen Village: An Industry Painted by Hand
Tucked in Longgang District is an unassuming urban village called Dafen. In the 1990s, Hong Kong art dealers arrived with bulk orders, and local residents taught themselves to reproduce oil paintings — Van Goghs, Monets — for export around the world. Today, Dafen is known as "China's No. 1 Oil Painting Village." Walking its alleys, you'll find easels, paint tubes, and half-dried copies of Sunflowers everywhere — a raw, vivid kind of artistry that captures something essential about Shenzhen: even art here is treated as an honest, hands-on trade.
Migratory Birds and the "Pioneer Ox"
The mangrove wetlands of Shenzhen Bay Park welcome flocks of black-faced spoonbills and other migratory birds each winter, arriving after a long journey south from Siberia to rest in one of China's most dens #深圳 #大湾区 #北上广深

Qiandao Lake, also known as Thousand Island Lake, is located in Chun'an County, Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. This man-made lake was formed by the construction of the Xin'an River Hydropower Station and takes its name from the 1,078 islands scattered across its waters. Covering a total area of approximately 573 square kilometers, with a forest coverage rate exceeding 90%, the lake is often praised as "the finest water under heaven."
The lake is renowned for its exceptionally clear water, with visibility reaching over 10 meters in some areas, making it one of the key drinking water sources for the Yangtze River Delta region. The climate around the lake is mild and distinctly seasonal—wildflowers bloom in spring, the lake sparkles under summer skies, autumn brings vibrant foliage, and winter often wraps the islands in soft mist, each season offering a unique scenic charm.
The islands vary greatly in shape and size, with some resembling animals and others like natural bonsai landscapes. Local authorities have organized the lake into several scenic zones, such as Meifeng Island, Longshan Island, and Monkey Island, allowing visitors to explore by boat and experience the sensation of "sitting on a boat as if drifting through a painting." The region is also known for its organic fish, with "Qiandao Lake fish head" being a signature local delicacy.

Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province, is often called a “paradise on earth.” As one of China’s famous ancient capitals, it is renowned for its beautiful scenery, rich culture, and vibrant economy. West Lake is the city’s most iconic landmark—the two are inseparable.
Located west of the city, West Lake is surrounded by mountains on three sides and borders the urban area on the east. Covering about 6.39 square kilometers, it features causeways such as Bai Causeway and Su Causeway, along with three islands, forming the classic layout of “one hill, two pagodas, three islands, three causeways, and five lakes.” In 2011, the “West Lake Cultural Landscape of Hangzhou” was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The beauty of West Lake lies in the harmony of nature and culture. Tang poet Bai Juyi and Song scholar Su Shi both governed and improved the lake, leaving behind the famous causeways and timeless verses. The renowned “Ten Scenes of West Lake” change with the seasons. Legends like the White Snake, along with sites such as Leifeng Pagoda, Lingyin Temple, and Yue Fei’s Temple, add deep cultural resonance.
Today, Hangzhou is a hub of the digital economy and a livable leisure city. The core scenic area of West Lake is free to visit. Guests can stroll the shores or boat across the water, experiencing the poetic charm of “mountains on three sides, city on one.”

Hongkou District, located in the northeastern part of central Shanghai, is a significant historical and cultural area. It is renowned as the "birthplace of Shanghai-style (Haipai) culture, a source of progressive culture, and a gathering place for cultural celebrities." Once part of the International Settlement in old Shanghai, it became a hub for intellectuals and writers in the early 20th century to the 1930s, particularly earning the title of a "major center of modern Chinese literature" thanks to sites like Duolun Road Cultural Street and Lu Xun's Former Residence.
Duolun Road Cultural Celebrities Street (formerly Darroch Road, about 550 meters long in an L-shape) was built around 1911. Lined with diverse Haipai architecture, Shikumen-style lanes, and garden houses, it is often called an "open-air museum of Shanghai architecture." Literary giants such as Lu Xun, Mao Dun, Guo Moruo, Ye Shengtao, Ding Ling, and Rou Shi lived or worked here, engaging in revolutionary literary activities and the Left-Wing Writers' League. The street encapsulates countless stories of creation and revolution in modern Chinese literature.
Lu Xun's Former Residence at No. 9, Lane 132, Shanyin Road (Continental Terrace / Dalu Xincun) is a three-story red-brick building where the great writer lived from 1933 until his death in 1936. It has been preserved with original furnishings, books, and personal items. Lu Xun spent his last nine years in Shanghai (1927–1936), producing numerous essays, translations, and works while supporting left-wing causes and protecting fellow intellectuals. The residence, along with nearby Lu Xun Park and Memorial Hall, forms a key cultural landmark rich in literary and revolutionary heritage.
Today, Hongkou District blends its profound historical legacy with ongoing urban renewal projects (such as those on Duolun Road), making it a vibrant destination for those seeking Shanghai's cultural depth, architectural charm, and revolutionary history.#上海 #上海虹口

Introduction to Changning District and the Chopin Statue in Shanghai
Overview of Changning District
Changning District is a key central urban district in western Shanghai. It borders Jing’an and Xuhui Districts to the east, Minhang District to the west and south, and Putuo and Jiading Districts to the north. Named after Changning Road that runs through the area, it is known as Shanghai’s “West Gate” and a bridgehead connecting to the Yangtze River Delta. The district covers approximately 37.19 square kilometers, with a resident population of about 680,000 and a registered population of around 570,000.
Changning boasts excellent transportation links, including Hongqiao International Airport and a dense network of metro lines and expressways. It is an important business, residential, and international exchange hub in Shanghai, home to the Gubei International Community and Hongqiao Economic and Technological Development Zone. The district features many multinational corporations and consulates, high green coverage, and a beautiful ecological environment with the Suzhou Creek flowing through it. Cultural landmarks include Zhongshan Park, Shanghai Zoo, and the Song Qingling Mausoleum, making it one of Shanghai’s most international and livable areas.
The Story of the Chopin Statue
The Frédéric Chopin Memorial in Zhongshan Park, Changning District, is a landmark of Sino-Polish cultural exchange and the only large-scale outdoor Chopin statue in Shanghai. It was unveiled on March 3, 2007 (the 197th anniversary of Chopin’s birth), donated by the Polish Chopin Memorial Committee, designed by Chinese sculptor Lu Pin, and cast in Poland.
The bronze sculpture stands about 7 meters tall and weighs 2.5 tons, making it one of the tallest Chopin monuments in the world. Its unique design features vertical pillars resembling piano keys of varying heights and thicknesses, symbolizing the rhythm and emotional intensity of Chopin’s music. The top depicts Chopin with eyes closed in deep contemplation. Zhongshan Park, established in 1914 as an English-style garden with over a century of history, echoes the atmosphere of Chopin concerts in Warsaw’s Royal Łazienki Park.
Since its installation, the site has become a classical music sanctuary in Shanghai. Since 2019, Changning District has hosted the annual Shanghai Changning International Grassland Piano Music Festival, with open-air performances on the lawn in front of the statue, allowing visitors to enjoy “listening to Chopin beneath Chopin’s statue.” This monument not only honors the great Romantic composer Frédéric Chopin but also stands as an enduring symbol of friendship between China and Poland.#上海 #上海长宁

Minhang District, Shanghai: A Blend of History and Modernity
Minhang District, situated in the southwest of Shanghai, is a vital part of this global metropolis. It combines profound historical roots with dynamic contemporary development. The area’s civilization traces back thousands of years to the ancient Maqiao Culture, marking it as a significant site of early human activity in the Shanghai region. Today, Minhang stands as a hub for science, education, and innovation, as well as a comfortable residential area. Its excellent connectivity—thanks to the Hongqiao transportation hub, the international airport, and multiple metro lines—makes it seamlessly integrated with the rest of the city.
One of Minhang’s greatest charms lies in its well-preserved ancient towns that evoke the classic Jiangnan water village atmosphere. The most prominent is Qibao Ancient Town. Located just a short distance from downtown Shanghai, this town feels like a step back in time with nearly a millennium of history. Named after the historic Qibao Temple, it features traditional alleys, interwoven waterways, and elegant bridges lined with time-honored buildings of gray bricks and dark tiles. Strolling along the old street, visitors can explore landmarks like the bell tower, heritage workshops, shadow puppet theaters, and various cultural memorials. Local delicacies such as glutinous cakes, tender mutton dishes, and sweet rice balls add to the sensory delight, while folk performances bring the streets to life.
Another gem is Zhaojialou Ancient Town, which dates back to the Yuan Dynasty and preserves several Qing-era courtyards and structures, offering a peaceful glimpse into suburban Shanghai’s historical legacy.
For those interested in deeper cultural exploration, the Minhang Museum is a must-visit. Housed in a spacious modern building, it systematically presents the district’s historical evolution, highlighting the development of Shanghai County, relics from the Maqiao Culture, and an impressive collection of traditional Chinese ethnic musical instruments. Through artifacts and interactive exhibits, visitors gain a vivid understanding of Minhang’s journey from ancient times to the present. Conveniently located and generally accessible to the public, it serves as an excellent educational and family-friendly destination.
Minhang District beautifully embodies Shanghai’s spirit—where the convenience of modern urban life harmoniously meets the warmth of traditional culture. Whether you seek historical traces or a relaxing getaway, it promises memorable experiences.#上海 #上海闵行
