Story of Golden Locks shows Guy’s own children absorbed in a fairy tale about Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The girl’s bear-like shadow and the boys’ frightened expressions blur the boundary between the real world and the world of imagination. Beyond childhood fantasy, the painting also symbolizes the transition from childhood to adulthood, as the older girl begins to take on a more mature, almost maternal role.
