Repost from LauraAboli
When Laughter Birthed Freedom When Lincoln called his cabinet together in the fall of 1862, they probably expected more bad news. The war had been one disaster after another and morale was sinking fast. But instead of military updates or grim reports, Lincoln opened a book by the humorist Artemus Ward and began reading aloud. It was lighthearted, even silly. His cabinet sat in uncomfortable silence, bewildered as their weary president laughed. Finally, Lincoln looked up and said, “Gentlemen, why don’t you laugh? With the fearful strain that is upon me, day and night, if I did not laugh, I should die. And you need this medicine as much as I do.” Then, having amused himself, came the radical idea that would change the course of history. Lincoln came up with his plan that would later become the Emancipation Proclamation; the executive order that declared freedom for all enslaved people in Confederate territory. It didn’t end slavery overnight, but it turned the Civil War into a moral crusade and transformed the Union’s cause from merely preserving a nation to liberating its people. It was a bold stroke that reshaped America’s destiny, born, unexpectedly, after a moment of laughter. Let’s always remember that laughter is healing. It’s medicine for the spirit, and sometimes the clearest ideas emerge only after we’ve allowed ourselves to breathe, to smile, and to remember our shared humanity, specially in times of chaos and madness, such as these. https://t.me/LauraAbolichannel
