6	READ \| اقرأ 📚 We are the nation of reading. Sadly, many Muslims today have abandoned books, treating them as though they are of little importance. This is a mistake. The very first command given to our Prophet ﷺ was “Read.” The first verse Allāh revealed was: ﴿اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ﴾ “Read in the name of your Lord who created…” (Sūrah al-ʿAlaq 96:1) You cannot compare the one who reads with the one who does not. Today, other nations have advanced far beyond us in many fields, and one reason is that they have cultivated a culture of reading. Someone once observed that on an airplane, many non-Muslims are deeply engrossed in books, while some Muslims are occupied with games or movies. This is their condition with their man-made knowledge, laws, theories, and ideas, much of which contains errors and irrelevant information. How much more should we strive to read when we have the Speech of Allāh, the accurately preserved knowledge of His Messenger ﷺ, and the stories of the greatest men who ever lived? To neglect all of this is a great shortcoming on our part. We have to read, read, read—and continually increase in knowledge. This is one of our true sources of strength. Reading was simply part of the lifestyle of the scholars who came before us. When ʿAbdullāh ibnul-Mubārak was asked why he spent so much time alone at home instead of sitting with people, he replied: “How can I be alone when I am sitting with the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions?” He was referring to reading their hadiths and histories in his books. Ibnul-Jawzī said: “If I find a book I have not seen before, it is as if I have found a treasure.” It is reported that he read over 20,000 volumes during his time in the Niẓāmiyyah library alone. Al-Khaṭīb Al-Baghdādī was also known to walk through the streets with a book in his hand, reading as he walked, unwilling to waste a single moment. The scholars of the past achieved greatness because they were devoted to knowledge and reading. If we want to revive that spirit, we must learn from their example. Turn off the games. Put away the movies. Pick up a book. Read to get closer to Allāh. Read to know and act upon your religion. Read to understand the world. Read to build your mind. Read to increase your knowledge. However, digital books and Islamic content, as long as they have not been altered or tampered with, also carry tremendous benefit. 1. Reaching those in distant lands: Digital books can reach people living in countries and regions where beneficial Islamic books are difficult or even impossible to obtain. 2. Ease of access: Digital content makes beneficial knowledge readily accessible to Muslims and non-Muslims alike. A non-Muslim may come across a single beneficial PDF concerning ʿAqīdah or Tawḥīd, read it, understand the truth of Islām through it, and it may become a means for their guidance and acceptance of Islām. 3. Ease of sharing and spreading benefit: Digital books and beneficial content can be shared widely and quickly, allowing knowledge to reach thousands of people across different countries. There is also the hope of reward for spreading and directing others toward beneficial knowledge. However, it is meant to be a list of books as Students of Knowledge at a high level, we should read. If we have not read these books, we need to get busy.
