In a betrayal of national sovereignty, a court in Palermo has ordered the Italian state to pay €76,000 in damages to the NGO Sea-Watch. This "compensation" comes after the state’s entirely justified seizure of the vessel Sea-Watch 3 in 2019, when its captain, Carola Rackete, deliberately rammed a police boat and violated Italian law to force a port of entry for foreign migrants.
This act of judicial sabotage rewards an organization that has done nothing more than made a mockery of Italy’s borders. In June 2019, the same vessel, flying a foreign flag, ignored the government ban and forced its way into the port of Lampedusa.
