When it comes to books, I want to know as little as possible. Honestly, even the title and cover feel like spoilers to me. Don't even get me started on genres, tropes, trigger warnings, and especially the ending. If I already know all of that, then what's the point? Where's the fun in reading a book when I already know there's a happy ending waiting for me? I want to go in completely blind. I want to wonder what happens next. I want to be shocked, surprised, devastated, and occasionally traumatized (I don't give a shit about my mental health) I want to spend the entire book on edge, unable to predict the next move, constantly questioning what's going to happen. I don't want certainty. I want suspense. And that's exactly why I fell in love with the Edge of Darkness trilogy. The only thing I knew before starting it was that the audiobooks were good. I didn't read the trigger warnings. I didn't look up the tropes. I had absolutely no idea what I was getting myself into, and I made sure it stayed that way until I finished the trilogy. I wasn't familiar with the author either, which made it even better. I had no idea what she was capable of or what kind of ending she would give these characters. At one point, I was genuinely convinced there wasn't going to be a happy ending for Kade and Stacy. That's what made every twist hit so hard. Every revelation, every loss, every new piece of information affected me exactly the way it was supposed to because I experienced it in real time, without spoilers softening the blow. I went through every possible stage while reading this trilogy, and it never stopped surprising me. That's my ideal reading experience.
