 My essay, “From Helplessness to Power: Collective Phantasy and Politics in Contemporary Iran,” is now published in Mad in America.
The essay explores how experiences of collective helplessness can be transformed into fantasies of agency, mastery, revenge, and restored power. It examines this process at two levels—the Iranian people and the state—tracing the distinct political phantasies of each, while asking what common emotional matrix may lie beneath them.
Mad in America is an independent, nonprofit publication devoted to critical inquiry into psychiatry and contemporary mental health discourse.
I’m particularly glad to see this piece published in a space willing to bring psychoanalysis into conversation with questions of politics, culture, and collective life.
