Repost from wahdat al wujūd
I'm raising funds on behalf of Rozan Abu Amsha, a young Palestinian girl who dreams of going to college and building a better future for herself and her family. Rozan has worked toward the opportunity to continue her education, but the devastating circumstances her family has experienced have made that dream incredibly difficult to achieve. Her family home was bombed and completely destroyed, leaving Rozan, her four siblings, and her family without the security of the home they once had. Today, her family is struggling to afford even the most basic necessities. There are times when they barely have enough food to eat properly, and with the family facing such severe financial hardship, paying for college is simply beyond their reach.

The power just... Goes. And then it takes 6-12 hours for service crews to get it working again. No explanation offered as to what the fuck even happened.

If you look at this shit, there's some outages caused by heli crashes or storm damage. Filter those out and you see universities, military towns, and airports being affected with no reported cause to the outage.

Regardless of who-or-what-dunnit, this is fucking unusual right? Our military, academia, and our most inflated/highly-valued economic assets all experiencing power loss and service failures in the span of one week?

I don't believe China has a real motive to go this deep. They play the cyber warfare game but they have reasons to want the USA in the top dog hotseat for a while to come. Plenty would cry Russian, but doing this would cost Russia money with no real tactical advantage to any of their current pursuits, i.e. combating NATO, which i think is fully capable of handling its own even if the USA becomes seriously preoccupied. It wouldn't really change much about the war, things have continued as usual on that front as Ukraine aid packages have stagnated in the last several years. Meanwhile the term 2 Trump admin spent its first year opening up heaps of security vulnerabilities and then in the next (current) year openly stated that they believe Israel began an aggressive spying campaign on the US because of Trump's demented flip-flopping on the Iran war.

I'm not assuming it's some grand cyber attack, but I do think someone is playing around in our infrastructure to see what they are capable of. My finger points to Israel.

So: Within the past 4 or 5 days, a bunch of AI services had an outage at the same time. Colleges across the country experienced countless power outages. Someone or something managed to trigger an aggressive remote thaw of frozen foods in military commissaries around the nation, and it's being investigated by the army and the airforce. I kind of suspect we are beginning to see the consequences of DOGE exposing secure private networks to the public facing internet and smuggling god-knows-what kind of federal information systems access off to AI projects.

This is likely another corporate pandora's box, in that these companies won't go away. We do however have the option of halting the advance and mitigating the sociological damages.

I've seen the videos, you've seen the videos: the American public is getting very fucking vocal with the institutions about this technology being unwelcome. Involve yourself in that. Protests, city council meetings, literally fucking anything.

Emphasize that the mass installation of these cameras in the span of a year or two is extremely anomalous compared to the creeping rollouts of public sector surveillance rollouts. These companies specifically exist to delegate aggressive rollouts of this technology which would otherwise be held up by courts and regulates because of the abusive and invasive nature of trying to plant a camera on every single fucking street corner in America

Every detail of this is important. Lock the rhetoric down.

Use of these technologies has lead to documented cases of stalking and threatening behavior against people across the entire US. This is not ambiguous. It must be stressed that these technologies make people *less* safe. Emphasize that it is not enough to switch contractors, and that the demand is very specifically to remove extant installations of ALPRs and other mass surveillance cameras owned by private companies. Stress that the private ownership of the companies limits the reach of safety regulations against these technologies, and that the company is obligated by corporate shareholders and the legal profit motive to disregard safety concerns as long as they don't cut into the bottom line.

16
If you work with/in an institution that contracts with Flock/Axon and other companies involved in ALPR and mass surveillance, it is possible to pressure leadership to end these contracts. This is a moment for classic agitprop. Make as many people within/around the institution as acutely aware of the surveillance presence and rally them to demand the contracts be canceled by any means necessary, citing the potential for rampant abuse enabled by bad faith actors with access to these "safety systems," from the police to other private organizations with contracts. Stress that the technologies have absolutely no oversight and accountability protocols, and that it has been demonstrated anyone with access may abuse these systems to harm and harass others.

PROACTIVELY look into Flock's business competitors, they're all invested in the same technologies being used in largely the same way. Communities severing their ties with Flock due to public fallout around Flock surveillance are routinely and quietly switching to Axon camposts.
89
18
stop calling them "flock cameras," axon and other companies are literally astroturfing the anti-surveillance movement to focus people on one company and their models. flock is a splinter company of axon that until very recently shared api and etc; axon is moving heavy to direct all attention toward flock cameras
