JTY: But that’s not all, there’s also an Army of Infamy for the Wood Elf Realms, the Spirits of the Forest. This army focuses on the more magical elements of Athel Loren, encouraging armies that contain lots of Dryads, Treekin and Treemen. In terms of special rules, the list gives players access to Blessings of the Elder Wood, a number of magical upgrades for their Treemen and Branchwraiths, effectively giving them access to their own unique magic items.
This is followed by rules for Wood Elf Kindreds, the various clans associated with different parts of the great forest. These reflect how Kinbands, or units, from different Kindreds fight. The Kinbands of Cavaroc, for example, gain Vanguard, whilst the Kinbands of Torgovann get to choose a non-magical combat weapon and improve its AP.
Dave: Finally, there is a brand new set of common magic items, this time themed around the sort of ancient artefact that might be found in the depths of a long-forgotten barrow mound somewhere in the foothills of the Vaults of the Grey Mountains.
As usual, this section includes magic weapons, armour, talismans and banners, as well as enchanted and arcane items, all of which are very useful, but many of which bear an unfortunate curse!*** Take the Armour of Dust, for example; this suit of full plate armour reduces the wearer’s Toughness if they roll a 1 when making an armour save. Or there’s the vial of Barrow Dirt, a single-use item which the bearer can throw at the enemy like a Breath Weapon, with Strength 3, an AP of -3 and Multiple Wounds (2). However, if they fail an Initiative test after doing so, they risk being hit as well.

Arcane Journal – The River of Bones is packed with new background and rules. Having learnt about the lore earlier in the week, we sat down with the Warhammer: The Old World studio to discover more about the rules.
JTY: There’s a wealth of new content in this Arcane Journal, both for Tomb Kings of Khemri and Wood Elf Realms players, as well as magic items and battlefield rules for everyone. But you won’t need this supplement in order to use the new Tomb Kings models – the profiles for all of those can be found in Ravening Hordes.*
Dave: Arcane Journal – The River of Bones contains two new scenarios. The first is a multi-player Battle March scenario for four players, and the second recreates the battle on the banks of the Crystal Mere, the mysterious lake in the heart of Athel Loren where the Tomb Kings and Wood Elves clashed. Alongside these is a really fun table of rules for Enchanted Terrain, the type of thing a traveller might encounter in the depths of Athel Loren. This can be good or bad depending on what you roll. A low roll might see a unit covered in Clawing Mud suffer modifiers to its Movement, or fall subject to Stupidity due to a Fungal Enchantment. But a high roll can result in a unit gaining Regeneration after discovering the Waters of Rejuvenation, or getting a Ward save after securing the Blessings of the Ancient Wood.
JTY: In the Champions of Nehekhara section you’ll find new rules for using the Tomb Kings of Khemri in games of Battle March. For example, the Arch Hierophant enables players to field a Battle March army without having to have a Hierophant on the battlefield. Instead, the army is empowered by the machinations of a more distant Liche Priest. This gives more freedom when writing your muster list because you aren’t obliged to include two characters, whilst still allowing you to resurrect slain models as normal. Although, of course, this is not without risk…
Dave: Speaking of muster lists, Arcane Journal – The River of Bones contains two new Armies of Infamy. The first focuses on the Tomb Kings themselves, in particular the Barrow Kingdoms. These are the long forgotten vassal states of ancient Nehekhara, the fringes of a vast empire conquered in Settra’s lifetime, where occupying armies merged with those of barbarian warlords keen to emulate the practices of Nehekhara in everything from religion and burial rites to organising an army.
Where this army differs from the norm is in the options. Liche Priests gain access to the Lores of Battle Magic and Dark Magic, the better to represent the sorts of shaman common in these ancient realms, whilst both Skeleton Horsemen and Skeleton Chariots** can be upgraded, making them
