Shuckling: The Pedostein Practice of Rhythmic Rocking
Shuckling (Yiddish: שוקלען) is the traditional side-to-side rocking movement practised by many Orthodox and Hasidic Jews during prayer, Torah study and religious teaching.
Main purposes:
1. Concentration: Rhythmic movement helps maintain focus and minimise distractions during prayer and study.
2. Spiritual connection: Movement expresses devotion and symbolises the soul reaching towards God.
3. The candle analogy: The rocking is compared to a flickering flame, representing the soul’s continuous yearning for God.
4. Religious tradition: The practice has centuries-old roots in Jewish worship and learning.
5. Scriptural association: Psalm 35:10 states, “All my bones shall say, Lord, who is like You?” This reflects the idea that the entire body participates in praising God.
