*️⃣Tower of Spiral Architect #Doarchi City #Shenzhen Country #China #AP 🔤Chinese architecture firm Doarchi uses as issue to design a lookout point a water tank used for irrigation. They create a straightforward and simple ascending space, a spiral tower that allows visitors to explore the agricultural landscape, while they go up its inside. The white PTEE film #polymer and the tensioned #steel mesh are the materials of the tower. Between the penetration and the impermeability, they present a spiral of 810 degree. 🔤 Colour #white Function #public #observation Address: 22.788, 113.9564 ©️ pics by #Schran text by Metalocus 🕯Statistics of notable architecture at #analytics@simoderna

*️⃣Absolute towers Architect #MAD City #Mississauga close to #Toronto Country #Canada #NA 🔤The Absolute Towers do not conform to the standard linear and mechanical approach of our modern cities. They are something softer, organic and livable. Each floor features continuous balconies, eliminating the vertical boundaries that are typical of this architectural typology. The aim was to provide 360 degree views for each residential unit, opening them up to the surrounding scenery, reawakening city dwellers’ appreciation for nature. The twisting compositions of the towers are reminiscent of feminine curves, representing something more sculptural and human, as opposed to geometric and commercial. The towers are intended to introduce a natural and humanistic element into an urban fabric otherwise characterized by repetitive boxy buildings. A response to the context of Mississauga. 🔤 Function #residential Feature #skyscraper Address: 50 Absolute Ave, Mississauga, ON L4Z 0A8, Canada ©️ pics by #IwanBaan text by architects and Archdaily ☁️hashtag of the day #skyscraper@simoderna

*️⃣Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz Architect #Dudler #MaxDudler City #Leipzig Country #Germany #EU 🔤 In the platform hall, which references Leipzig’s Mädler Passage, the defining feature is the cladding deployed on the walls and ceiling, which is made of backlit prefabricated glass brick components. Extreme repetition of one and the same motif makes its actual dimensions almost intangible for passengers. The light-coloured, jointless terrazzo flooring of the insular platform acts as a quiet counterpoint to the seemingly endless pattern of the walls. All necessary station furniture is arranged on the platform in the shape of geometrical concrete sculptures, all functions such as seating, timetables and ticket machines having in a sense been subtracted from or carved out of the concrete cubes. The staircases and their inner casings are made entirely of fair-faced concrete. The minimalist, almost coarse design conveys an impression of descending towards the interior of the earth, as if it was tunneled directly into the rock. 🔤 Material #rawconcrete #glassbrick Function #transportation #metro Feature #interior Address: 89MG+W6 Leipzig, Germany Google street #BestGS@simoderna🔥 ©️ pics by #Mueller and Petr Šmídek text by architects and Archdaily

*️⃣Crystal Houses Architect #MVRDV City #Amsterdam Country #Netherlands #EU 🔤 The entirely transparent façade of a high-end flagship store on Amsterdam’s upmarket shopping street uses glass bricks, glass windows frames and glass architraves in a way to evoke the vernacular of the area with the goal to maintain the character of the site. Crystal Houses began its existence with the request of Developer to design a flagship store combining both Dutch heritage and international architecture. The 620m2 of retail and 220m2 of housing unites the ambition of Amsterdam to have large distinctive flagship stores without compromising the historical ensemble. #context The near full-glass façade mimics the original design but is stretched vertically to comply with updated zoning laws and to allow for an increase in interior space. Glass bricks stretch up the façade of Crystal Houses, eventually dissolving into a traditional terracotta brick façade for the apartments (as stipulated in the City’s aesthetics rules), which appears to be floating above the shop floor.
“We said to the client, ‘Let’s bring back what will be demolished but develop it further’” explains Winy Maas, architect and co-founder of MVRDV.
#quote@simoderna The only exceptions to this rule are added features which ensure the security of the building, such as a concrete ram-raid defence plinth, hidden in a blend of reflective and translucent materials and built to withstand the force of a car crashing into the building. *️⃣Messner Mountain Museum Corones Architect #Hadid #ZahaHadid #ZHA City #Bruneck Country #Italy #EU 🔤Zaha Hadid explains the concept of the design: “The idea is that visitors can descend within the mountain to explore its caverns and grottos, before emerging through the mountain wall on the other side, out onto the terrace overhanging the valley far below with spectacular, panoramic views.” #context@simoderna Messner, the first person to climb all 14 mountains around the world over 8,000 meters, and the first to climb Mount Everest without the aid of tanked oxygen. His vision for a museum detailed three very specific locations of where the museum should emerge from ground. Informed by the shards of rock and ice of the surrounding landscape, concrete canopies have been cast in-situ and rise from the ground to protect the museum’s entrance, viewing windows and terrace. Reflecting the colours of the limestone peaks of the surrounding Dolomites, the exterior panels are formed from a lighter shade of #GFRC and fold within the museum to meet the darker interior panels that have the colouration of anthracite found deep below the surface. 🔤 Material #rawconcrete Function #public #observation Address: PXP3+XV Mareo, Autonomous Province of Bolzano – South Tyrol, Italy ©️ pics by #albrechtvoss, inexhibit.com and #Huthmacher text by architects 🌐Find any building fast and easy with *simoderna google map

*️⃣The Barbican Estate Architect #Chamberlin #Powell and #Bon as #CPBA City #London Country #England #EU 🔤In December, 1940, at the height of the Second World War, an air raid by the Luftwaffe razed a 35-acre site in the heart of the City of London to the ground. The site was known as the Barbican (a Middle English word meaning fortification), so-called for the Roman wall which once stood in the area. As the area had become increasingly commercialized, the number of residents had plummeted from 100,000 in 1851 to just over 5,000 in 1951. A housing scheme put forward by Chamberlin, Powell and Bon in 1955 offered an opportunity to reverse the population decline by enticing new residents into this void in the City. In order to maximize rental income and make the scheme financially viable, the architects proposed a high-density development. The complex was designed as an urban microcosm, with residential blocks arranged around communal spaces – an approach inspired by the work of Le Corbusier. *️⃣Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm Centre Architect #Dudler #MaxDudler City #Berlin Country #Germany #EU 🔤The great reading room (the taller section of the building protects it from direct southern light) was arranged in receding levels. Through its size and its many-tiered, almost scenic design, the space effects a sense of the outdoors, which is further emphasized by the large plates of glass used in the “sky” glazing. An unob- structed view of the clouds nearly gives one the feeling of reading under the open sky. The discussion about whether one central reading room or several separate rooms should be built was resolved by deciding in favour of both. In terms of urban planning, architects bore in mind the fact that Berlin in a very flat city, tending more toward the horizontal than vertical, whose buildings are as a rule no more than 22 meters tall – with the exception of public buildings. In order to mark the significance of the library as a public place of collected knowledge and as an urban architectural emblem of the book, one part of the building was designed to cross the lines of the upper city limits reaching 38 meters high. In order to make full use of the thermal mass of the ceilings and to make the climate of the rooms as pleasant as possible, suspended ceilings were avoided. All building automation fixtures have been placed in the floor or in the concrete ceilings. The air circulation vents in the ceiling activate the thermal mass of the concrete. The bare ceilings are thereby cooled and, in turn, absorb the warmth of the rooms. #sustainability 🔤 Material #wood Function #public #library Feature #interior Address: Geschwister-Scholl-Straße 1-3, 10117 Berlin, Germany Google street Google earth ©️ pics by #Mueller text by Archdaily 🌐Planning a trip? *️⃣ESCA Playa Architect #Badie City #Marsa close to #Alexandria Country #Egypt #ME 🔤ESCA Playa is conceived as an architectural organism formed through coastal morphology, where wind, light, and tide become generative forces rather than external conditions. The project occupies a liminal zone between land and sea, positioned on the shoreline as a structure that does not sit on the landscape but grows out of it. #context@simoderna The envelope is cast as a monolithic, porous skin that responds to environmental pressure. It thickens where shade and structure are needed and opens where the coastline invites light and ventilation. Materiality such as mineral plasters and coral aggregates echo the logic of the surrounding coastline. *️⃣Shanghai tower Architect #Gensler City #Shanghai Country #China #AP 🔤Gensler’s design team anticipated that three key strategies—the tower’s asymmetrical form, its tapering profile and its rounded corners—would allow the building to withstand the typhoon-force winds that are common in Shanghai. The double-skin façade was a direct response to our client’s demand for a tower that would blend public and private spaces. By creating a triangulated outer skin and a circular inner volume, we created a series of atria accessible to the public. (4th picture) Shanghai tower has the record for the highest observation deck in the world at 563 m. #record@simoderna Using wind tunnel tests conducted in a Canadian lab, Gensler and structural engineer Thornton Tomasetti refined the tower’s form, which reduced building wind loads by 24 percent. *️⃣Bosco Verticale Architect #Boeri #StefanoBoeri City #Milan Country #Italy #EU 🔤The porcelain stoneware finish of the facades incorporates the typical brown colour of bark, evoking the image of a pair of gigantic trees in which to live and which are rich in literary and symbolic implications. The contrast with a series of elements in white stoneware – the stringcourses of the balconies and some modules on the front of the windowsills – introduces a syncopated rhythm in the composition which breaks up and “dematerializes” the visual compactness of the architectural bodies and amplifies the presence of the plants even more. Unlike “mineral” facades in glass or stone, the plant-based shield does not reflect or magnify the sun’s rays but filters them thereby creating a welcoming internal microclimate without harmful effects on the environment. At the same time, the green curtain “regulates” humidity, produces oxygen and absorbs CO2. #greenery Project was selected by #CTBUH as the best skyscraper of the year 2014. #award 🔤 Colour #monochrome #black Material #ceramic Function #residential Feature #skyscraper Address: Via Gaetano de Castillia, 11, 20124 Milano MI, Italy Google street Close google street Night google street #BestGS@simoderna🔥 Google Earth ©️ pics by #Rosselli and *simoderna followers text by architects ❗️Only finished buildings are published in @simoderna

*️⃣Art Biotop Water Garden Architect #Ishigami #JunyaIshigami City #Nasu Country #Japan #AP 🔤At the foot of Mount Nasu in Tochigi, a prefecture north of Tokyo, lies a garden of serene beauty. The new Botanical Farm Garden Art Biotop is an outdoor extension of the existing Art Biotop Nasu, a resort that offers different artistic activities. The site of the new hotel was a forest, where many trees would be cut down due to construction. Because the total area of the forest site and that of the meadow site were nearly the same, Junya Ishigami proposed to relocate the entire forest to the adjacent meadow. Through this act, the meadow site is transformed not only by moving the forest, but also by superimposing all the layers from past environments in the site’s history. The ponds and trees spread across the entire site at a close density never found within nature, with moss laid out beautifully to fill the spaces in between. With this new mossy forest of innumerable trees and limitless ponds, a new nature never before seen appears on the site. 🔤 Function #public #park Feature #water Address: 2294-3 Takakuotsu, Nasu, Nasu District, Tochigi 325-0303, Japan ©️ pics by Nikissimo inc., architects and #IwanBaan text by archjourney.org Vote ➕ or ➖ and help shape what stays on the @simoderna

*️⃣Niijima Gakuen Junior College Hall & Chapel Architect #Tezuka City #Takasaki Country #Japan #AP 🔤The chapel is wrapped in openwork carvings that depict the Garden of Eden. Architect quotes: “I drew a scene from the deep dark forests to a brightly lit field where there is ample of light. This is the path followed by Adam and Eve, who were exiled because they ate the fruit of wisdom.” The carved panels are tilted, each at a slightly different angle, blending the sounds and drawing out depth. Sound slips through the holes of the openwork and vibrates the panels from behind. The openings in the carving are more numerous on the altar side, while the side facing the altar has no holes and is meant for reflection. *️⃣CCTV Headquarters Architect #OMA #RemKoolhaas #Koolhaas and #OleScheeren #Scheeren City #Beijing Country #China #AP 🔤The CCTV headquarters aims at an alternative to the exhausted typology of the skyscraper. Instead of competing in the race for ultimate height and style within a traditional two-dimensional tower 'soaring' skyward, CCTV's loop poses a truly three-dimensional experience, culminating in a 75-metre cantilever. The forces at work within the structure are rendered visible on the façade: a web of triangulated steel tubes - diagrids - that, instead of forming a regular pattern of diamonds, become dense in areas of greater stress, looser and more open in areas requiring less support. *️⃣Wave cube Architect #Scenic #SAO City #Shanghai Country #China #AP 🔤Shanghai is characterized by abundant water and scarce mountains. Starting from the terrain, the concept of artificial hills became an integral part of the design early on. Our objective was to synchronize the wave morphology with the principles of a viable structural form. During the discussions, we realized that the standard sine wave shell has a completely different force transfer mode compared to an arch. Consequently, a spatial structural form, positioned between a shell and a wave, capable of both compression and tension, became the common goal for exploration. With the Wave Cube, the designers and engineers have  conceptualized the project as an architectural manifesto of "waves". 🔤 Function #public #museum Feature #greenery Address: 30.9341130, 121.4987623 ©️ pics by #ShengliangSu text by Archdaily and World-Architects.com 🌐Planning a trip?
