Fifteen New York sheriffs just asked a federal court to freeze Albany’s ban on working with ICE. They say the state’s “Local Cops, Local Crimes Act” ties their hands, voids legal 287(g) agreements, and puts communities at risk. These are independently elected sheriffs. Their voters hired them to keep criminals off the street, including illegal aliens already sitting in county jails on local charges. Kathy Hochul and Letitia James want those partnerships dead. They even sued a sheriff who wouldn’t rip up his ICE contract on command. The sheriffs’ argument is simple: Federal law allows the partnerships. Congress authorized them. Albany does not get to conscript every sheriff into a statewide sanctuary policy. If someone is already in jail for a crime committed in that county, handing them to ICE is not “federal overreach.” It is basic public safety. Fifteen sheriffs are standing up. The court should let them do their jobs.
