The Domestic Sphere in India: Current Realities
1. Violence and Inequality
• Persistence of structural violence: NFHS-5 (2019–21) shows nearly 30% of women experience intimate partner violence, yet only 14% report such cases, indicating barriers of stigma, fear, and weak institutional support.
• Dowry deaths: Despite legal safeguards, India continues to witness around 7,000 dowry deaths annually (2017–22)—a stark reminder of patriarchal control over women’s lives within households.
2. Gendered Time Allocation (Time Use Survey, 2024)
• Unpaid domestic services: 93% of women spend an average of 7 hours daily on household work.
• Care responsibilities: 41% of women additionally spend 2.5 hours/day on caregiving.
• Male participation gap: Men spend barely 26 minutes on domestic chores and 16 minutes on caregiving, reflecting entrenched gender norms and unequal division of labour.
3. Invisible yet Critical Contribution
• Economic invisibility: SBI (2023) estimated that if women’s unpaid domestic work were monetised, it would equal 7% of India’s GDP (~₹22.5 lakh crore).
• Undervalued frontline workers: Anganwadi workers, ASHAs, and mid-day meal staff—who sustain health and nutrition outcomes—are still treated as “volunteers” without fair wages, job security, or recognition.

Repost from UPSC Ethics 2026
As a Dalit Associate Professor of Marketing at IIM Bangalore, Dr Gopal Das endured more than 100 instances of caste-based exclusion. He was denied committee roles, PhD teaching opportunities, and even basic dignity.
Yet today, he stands tall as India's #1 Marketing Researcher, Asia's #2, and among the top 17 worldwide. For five consecutive years, he has been featured in Stanford's Top 2% Global Scientists list, while also serving on the editorial boards of leading marketing journals.
Dr Das is more than a researcher - he is a beacon of resilience. His journey from systemic injustice to global academic recognition shows what ambition can mean for marginalised communities.

Repost from UPSC Ethics 2026
Example:
Whistleblowing in Public ServiceCase: An officer in the Ministry of Health discovers that funds allocated for a rural vaccination program are being diverted to private accounts by senior officials. If the officer remains silent, the corruption will continue, depriving thousands of poor villagers of essential healthcare. If they expose it, they risk retaliation, transfer, or even threats to personal safety. Ethical Dilemma: Personal Interest vs. Public Good Loyalty to hierarchy vs. Duty to Constitution & Citizens Short-term risk vs. Long-term integrity of system Ethical Analysis: Deontological Ethics: The officer’s duty is to uphold the law and protect public welfare. Utilitarian View: Exposing corruption will maximize welfare by ensuring funds reach the needy. Virtue Ethics: Courage, honesty, and integrity are essential virtues of a public servant. Possible Course of Action: Collect evidence discreetly. Report through internal vigilance mechanisms. If ignored, use statutory provisions (e.g., Whistle Blowers Protection Act). Ensure public interest is protected while minimizing personal risk. Moral Lesson: A civil servant must act as a guardian of public resources and values, prioritizing the larger good over personal convenience. https://t.me/ethicsforupscmains
