The sad truth is that they know our history better than we do, while we are ignorant of our past. We are ashamed to even discuss our history of glory and victory in the family, while they are proud to teach their history of humiliation and defeat to their children. We need to think long and hard about this.

The Virtue of the Fast of Ashura When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Madinah, he saw the Jews fasting on the day of 'Ashoora and asked, "Why are you fasting today?" The Jews said, "Today is a good day. Allah saved the Children of Israel from the oppression of Pharaoh on this day. Moses (peace be upon him) fasted on this day to thank Allah. We will do the same." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "We are closer to the Sunnah of Moses than you are." He fasted on that day and ordered his companions to do the same. (Bukhari, Savm, 69; Tajrid-i Sarih, VI/308, 309) The Messenger of Allah said: "The most virtuous month for fasting after Ramadan is the month of Muharram." (Muslim, Sıyam, 202-203) Imām Ahmad reported from Ibn 'Abbās (رضي الله عنهما) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Fast on the day of Ashura, but go against the Jews by fasting the day before or the day after Ashura (on the 9th, 10th or 10th, 11th)." (Ibn Hajar, 4/245)
