In the spring, amid the war with Iran, a report circulated among military circles: reports claimed that a Chinese ship in the Middle East was carrying components for a nuclear program. The military prepared to intercept the vessel, and aircraft were launched into the air. Just before the operation began, it was discovered that the document had been prepared by an analyst using a chatbot, and that the chatbot had failed to correctly identify the cargo. A source described the report as “completely false,” adding that it “nearly started a war”: an attack on the Chinese vessel could have led to a conflict between the two countries.

⚡️❗️OpenAI was hacked by a model from Anthropic. An HEIF image uploaded to OpenAI’s public support forum triggered a vulnerability in the website’s image decoder, resulting in code execution on the forum. This eventually led to the creation of a Pull Request inside an internal OpenAI GitHub repository. After that, an exploit was carried out against OpenAI’s Single Sign-On (SSO) system — the “Sign in with OpenAI” button used by the forum. This vulnerability allowed access to the forum to be escalated into actual access to people’s ChatGPT and Codex accounts if they had previously logged into the forum, including OpenAI employees. OpenAI fixed the SSO vulnerability around 14 hours after it was reported and paid a $6,500 reward for discovering the vulnerability. The team says that Anthropic’s Opus 4.8 model discovered the libheif vulnerability, while Opus 5 turned it into a practical, executable exploit.
