Doctoral Researcher in Wood Science and Chemistry
We seek a highly qualified, talented, and motivated individual, with an enthusiastic attitude towards high-quality research, to work on next generation structural materials made of super-engineered wood (within a SUPERWOOD consortium). This two-party consortium (Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems and Department of Civil Engineering) comprises of two supplementing projects. The research activities of the candidate will focus on the modifying wood microstructures to yield strong and functional wood based structural materials. The present position is fully funded by a Research Council of Finland project (https://research.fi/en/results/funding/81529) led by Dr. Bruno Mattos.
Scientific Environment
The Circular Biobased Materials group (www.aalto.fi/en/department-of-bioproducts-and-biosystems/circular-biobased-materials) is dedicated to advancing sustainable solutions for materials development, production, and utilization. Our primary focus lies in harnessing the potential of non-utilized biobased resources to create materials that adhere to the principles of circular and bioeconomy. Dr. Fiona Yuan at Worcester Polytechnic Institute is Recruiting PhD Students in Robotics Engineering, Healthcare Technology and Artificial Intelligence
My research primarily focuses on socially assistive robotics, multimodal human-robot interaction, and human-centered AI to enhance dementia care and other healthcare applications. Motivated by the needs of individuals with dementia and their families, I am dedicated to developing AI and robotic systems to better care for those affected by dementia. My work encompasses robotic perception, decision-making, and feedback mechanisms within the human-robot interaction process.
Inspired by human intelligence in caregiving, I am particularly interested in transferring aspects of human intelligenceβsuch as emotional intelligence, social intelligence, adaptability, and personalizationβto robots through AI. My research extends beyond robotic modeling and algorithms. Through close collaborations with experts and stakeholders from various disciplines, including nursing, occupational therapy, recreational therapy, social work, caregivers, and individuals with dementia, I am passionate about bringing social robots into real-world applications. Interdisciplinary collaboration is a foundational component of my research.
