Day 3: Tool of the Day – Wireshark (Network Protocol Analyzer)
What is Wireshark?
Wireshark is the world’s most popular network packet analyzer. It captures packets in real time and displays them in a human-readable format. This helps ethical hackers analyze network traffic, detect anomalies, and understand protocols.
Why Wireshark Matters in Ethical Hacking
Monitor suspicious activity
Understand network-level attacks
Reverse-engineer malware behavior
Analyze protocol vulnerabilities
Capture login credentials (in unencrypted environments)
How to Install Wireshark
Windows:
Download from: https://www.wireshark.org/download.html
Follow installer steps
During installation, allow the WinPcap/Npcap installation (required for packet capture)
Linux (Debian-based):
bash
sudo apt update && sudo apt install wireshark
macOS (using Homebrew):
bash
brew install wireshark
Basic Features & Usage
Capture Live Traffic:
Open Wireshark
Select your active network adapter (Wi-Fi/Ethernet)
Click the blue shark fin button to begin capturing
Apply Capture Filters:
(Optional, filters packets before capturing)
Examples:
port 80 – Capture HTTP traffic
host 192.168.1.1 – Monitor a specific host
Apply Display Filters:
(Narrow down the captured packets for analysis)
http – Shows HTTP packets
ip.addr == 192.168.1.5 – Packets involving that IP
tcp.port == 443 – HTTPS traffic
Packet Analysis:
Click on any packet to see protocol layers (Ethernet, IP, TCP, HTTP, etc.)
Check flags, source/destination IPs, ports, payloads, and more.
Power Tips
Use Follow TCP Stream to view entire conversations (right-click a packet > Follow > TCP Stream)
Export specific packets for reports or further analysis
Use color-coding to spot suspicious traffic (Wireshark provides this by default)
Ethical Hacker Use Cases
Analyzing DNS tunneling
Detecting ARP spoofing
Identifying malware calling home
Examining unencrypted login credentials
Learning how protocols like FTP, Telnet, and SMTP work
Mini Challenge for Day 3
Goal: Capture your own browsing session and filter for login pages.
Steps:
Start capturing
Browse to an HTTP site (not HTTPS for testing only)
Filter with:
http.request.method == "POST"
Try finding username/password parameters in the payload
Sunday Motivation:
"While others rest, you're getting ahead."
Success doesn’t take Sundays off – neither should your dreams.
You're building a future most only dream of. Stay hungry. Stay ethical. Stay hacking.
