A new federal tax rule already in force for 2026 is still flying under the radar for millions of Americans 65 and older. The Senior Bonus Deduction, created under the One Big Beautiful Bill signed in 2025, lets qualifying seniors subtract another $6,000 from taxable income — $12,000 if both spouses are 65 or older. Patriots who spent decades funding Washington now have a short window to keep more of what they earned before the extra break expires after 2028.
The deduction stacks. It sits on top of the regular standard deduction and the longstanding extra amount for age 65. For a single filer that can shield roughly $24,000 before a dollar of federal income tax is owed. For a married couple both over 65, combined deductions can reach about $47,500. That is not a rounding error. In the 22 percent bracket, $6,000 extra deduction is more than $1,300 in real cash — Medicare premiums, prescriptions, or a repair that would otherwise come out of a fixed check.
It works whether the household takes the standard deduction or itemizes. Married couples must file jointly. A valid Social Security number is required. The full amount is available below $75,000 of modified adjusted gross income for singles and $150,000 for joint filers. Above those lines it shrinks by $60 for every $1,000 of extra income and vanishes at $175,000 single and $250,000 joint.
The rumor that Social Security is now tax-free is false. The old rules still apply. Lower taxable income can reduce how much of those benefits get taxed, and some modest-income seniors may owe nothing federal, but the Social Security tax formula itself was not repealed.
This is not automatic. Filers use Form 1040-SR, mark the age box, and complete the new Schedule 1A. Anyone charging a fee to “unlock” the deduction is running a scam. The forms are free.
The clock is the catch. The bonus exists only through tax year 2028 unless Congress extends it. After that the extra layer disappears and the IRS keeps more. Seniors who ignore the phase-out lines, the joint-filing rule, or the form will leave money on the table while the same agency that built the income-tax machine still takes first cut. The next two filing seasons are the time to use the window — or watch it slam shut.
