The nice feeling with stuff like this where you're coming back to an OC years later, is you can really feel like you're breathing more life into them than ever before. It's always a struggle when I look at a set of OCs over several pages and feel like they were stronger early on, but here after 2 years away and the need to have something other than just the butlers, I feel real confident I'm gonna do the gang justice. 😤
Oh nooo poor Zang's tig old bitties are acting up, what's a guy to dooooo

I bet I could take the Sons of Naberius in a fight
(Dog boyos from the spectacular indie beat-em-up Kings of Hell)

The sex happens in earnest on the next batch of pages i promise 🫠
If you encounter Al in the middle of some midnight snacking, he might just devour you instead...

Environments are still kinda the bane of my existence color wise but what IS pretty great is BlenderKit. Just having a library full of props to jam together in a room let me pull this scene together in the lesser part of an afternoon, luckily most of Blenderkit's assets are perfectly attuned to the aesthetic I need, minimalist IKEA furniture lol
An interesting bit of R/D has been looking at other artists with backgrounds (Catsudon/Purplebirdman/CaptainNikko) and seeing how *they* solve for this problem, because it's a real pitfall composing things in a way that *forces* you to re-draw all the details, when you can actually get away with a lot of establishing shots/cropping out all the details from there, or even just omitting things in a way that lets the viewer's imagination remember where things are.
As always, Anhes is a pretty big influence for how I approach this comic in particular, and you can see on his patreon that he doesn't even *need* a 3D mockup or seemingly any shortcut there, he's just that good at constructing environments using good ol perspective lines. Still, you can see where he's keeping the level of detail down on purpose.
whooooof finally done with these pages
took a week longer for a variety of reasons but I'm realizing what a commitment it is making a long contiguous comic and needing to keep track of environment details/props and such— any one detail takes another pass of needing to make sure you kept everything in there. I've been planning on stacking up Al's shelves with all kinds of knick knacks that'd inform his character, but that would pretty much kill me to draw so for now it's just books 💀

Blake puts his training to the test-- from this view directly above you, he won't miss a thing!

Blake finally sees Marcus for himself, along with the *spirited* business relationship he shares with Al.
I use this method of sticking all my Environment Lines/Character Lines/Panel Frames in a reference group together, makes the flat color step a ton faster than tracing each shape precisely by hand.
For those unfamiliar with reference layers, you can label a layer/group of layers with the little lighthouse button, which basically lets certain tools treat that batch of layers like one unified image, usually to let you fill-bucket flat colors onto a different layer. Procreate also has this idea kinda buried down in there somewhere.
Paired with a different tool I've used for a while: https://assets.clip-studio.com/en-us/detail?id=1800143
Also, wanna shout out a free clip studio tool I snagged for this past batch of pages that's insanely helpful: https://assets.clip-studio.com/en-us/detail?id=1759448

A mysterious guest arrives to receive some of the butlers' hospitality, but it's yet to be seen if they like what Blake is serving...

It takes a stern mind and a clenched buttocks to be a Haynes butler. Does Blake have what it takes??
