Before forwarding messages on ' *Environment Day* ', know the truth about our environment!
In India, we call all natural elements sacred, but do we respect them at all?
Let's understand:
1. Earth (Extinction of Wild Species)
At the time of independence, India had 4 regions with the densest forests and the highest population of wildlife. We have lost 90% of those areas today!
At present, 1 million species in India are on the verge of extinction.
- India has 18% of the world's population but only 2% of its forests. The remaining forests are also being sold to industrialists annually at cheap rates for development.
The loss of biodiversity costs India approximately 1 trillion rupees annually.
2. Fire (Impact of Fires on Remaining Forests)
About 65% of forests in India are affected by forest fires. Incidents have increased sevenfold in Himachal Pradesh and threefold in Uttarakhand.
Forest fires raise the temperature of surrounding areas by 5 to 10 degrees.
Forest fires cause India an annual loss of approximately 250 billion rupees.
3. Water (Threat of Drought and Polluted Water)
Two billion people globally rely on the glaciers of the Himalayas, which are melting rapidly. Due to extreme heat, 75-80% of glaciers may melt in the next decade. The water sources of rivers like the Ganga, Yamuna, Brahmaputra, and Indus are drying up!
And the available water is polluted! 50% of waterborne disease cases in the world are found in India alone.
These diseases cost India approximately 490 billion rupees annually.
4. Air (Air Pollution as the Biggest Cause of Death)
Eighty-three Indian cities are among the world's 100 most polluted cities. According to WHO standards, PM2.5 pollutant levels should be less than 5 µg/m³. The average PM2.5 level in Delhi is 188 µg/m³!
The result of breathing such air? Respiratory diseases and air pollution are the leading causes of death in 22 states of India.
Air pollution causes an annual loss of 3 trillion rupees to India.
Air pollution reduces the average lifespan of Indians by 5 years. If you live in North India, your lifespan has been reduced by 11 years!
5. Sky (Raining Fire from the Sky)
2023 has been the hottest year in the last 100,000 years. 100,000 years!
- For the first time in history, the Earth's average temperature remained above 1.5 degrees for 12 consecutive months. The Earth is scorching!
- In 2024 alone, the Earth's average temperature was above 1.7 degrees. Above the 1.5-degree limit!
You might be thinking, what difference does 1.5 degrees make?
- Changes in Earth's average temperature have caused in India in 2023:
- 3,200 deaths,
- Over 400,000 homes destroyed,
- 70,000 livestock deaths,
- Over 2 million hectares of crops destroyed.
Planting a tree on Environment Day does not absolve you of your responsibility.
You cannot turn away from your responsibility now; the issue has escalated significantly!
99% of people are unaware of most of the points mentioned above! While you were busy fulfilling your selfish interests, you were unknowingly inviting massive destruction on Earth!
While you were suffering from the heat, the media, IPL, and elections were distracting you with entertainment, and you were lost in that intoxication!
During that time...
The risk is severe! Today, not only is there a need to wake people up, but also to bring fundamental changes to the entire system with war-level speed.
