In my opinion,the shias are right in the matter pertaining to the caliphate of 'Ali'.For as far as i understand from islamic history,Ali was a person with the distinguished and high qualifications required for caliphate.

They said: Yes! We bear witness. Lest you should say on the day of resurrection:  Surely we were heedless of this.” (7:172) Imam Bāqir (AS) was asked, “When Imam ʿAlī (AS) was called the Commander of the Faithful? The Imam (AS) replied, “When Allah made him as referred in this verse a compact was made with the children of Adam (AS) that Allah is their Lord and Muḥammad (P.B.U.H. & H.H.) their Prophet and ʿAlī (AS) the Commander of the Faithful.”
