Liverpool may be playing at Anfield, but they’re heading into this one with some major attacking absences. Reuters reports that Alexander Isak picked up a thigh injury while on international duty with Sweden, while Cody Gakpo injured his ankle playing for the Netherlands. Both forwards are expected to miss the match. Isak has scored four goals in five league appearances so far, so his absence is a big blow—not just because of his goal threat. He gives Liverpool a focal point up front, helps them hold the ball in the opposition half, finds space between defenders, and gets on the end of quick passes. Without him, the team may have to change some of its usual attacking combinations. Gakpo being out also leaves Liverpool with fewer options in attack. Man City look to be in better shape going into the game. They’re unbeaten and have won all five of their opening league matches. That said, I wouldn’t assume the visitors will dominate from the first minute: playing at Anfield is never easy, and the atmosphere around the club could make this a tense one. But based on the available squad news and the teams’ early-season form, City have plenty going for them.
