Species: Vasuki Indicus (extinct) Remains found in a lignite mine in Gujarat, India. The Vasuki Indicus is an extinct species of snake that lived during the Middle Eocene epoch, approximately 47 million years ago. While it's 27 pre-cloacal vertebrae was discovered back in 2004, it has only been described to science very recently in 2024 and is now known as the longest snake to have ever existed, taking the crown from the extinct Titanoboa, who was previously believed to be the largest snake possible at around 40 ft, and the extinct Colossaeus who grew to 30ft. The induvidual found would have been 49 ft in lenght with estimates of 35-50 ft being the average length for adults. It was likely slow-moving and an ambush predator, similar to an anaconda. The species got its name with “Vasuki” coming from the Hindu mythological serpent Vāsuki, which is wrapped around the neck of Lord Shiva, and “Indicus” referring to its country of discovery, India. Species: Sanfransico Garter Snake. Found in the Sanfransico Peninsula. This elusive and skittish garter snake is one of America's rarest species of snake. They are tiny and vibrantly colourful animals who, even before San Francisco became a major city, already had a small, restricted range. Their habitat mainly consists of grasslands and wetlands near ponds where they hunt small prey with their mildly toxic saliva, which could be classified as venom, but is entirely harmless to humans. Though their population is listed as least concern, their total wild population is estimated to be between only 1000-2000 induviduals and they have been considered an endangered species by the US government since the year 1967 and are protected. Urban and commercial development as well as agriculture, poaching, pesticide use, and road accidents are all significant factors in its population decline. Species: Red Bellied Black Snake. Found in East Coast Australia. The red bellied black snake is one of Australia's most recognized snakes, mostly due to their distinctive colouration. They were once feared by early settlers to be highly dangerous, but while they are venomous, their venom is relatively weak compared to other Australian snakes and there has never been a recorded death caused by them. They are are generally solitary and diurnal snakes. When not hunting or basking, they may be found hiding under timber, rocks, and rubbish or down holes and burrows near bodies of water such as rivers. Their main diet is frogs which they hunt while in water and they also like to stir up the substrate near water in order to attract or disturb prey. For defence, these tend to be inoffensive and shy, typically withdrawing or fleeing into water when approached, biting is a last resort. In the wild their population is least concern. Species: Boulengers Garter Snake. Found in Southern Africa. These snakes are secretive and seldom encountered. Though they are not well known or well documented, they do have a reputation for being tricky and smart when threatened. To confused, intimated, and disorientate, this snake will do a special dance along the ground, jerking in unpredictable directions and in unexpected ways to keep threats from coming too close. Though they are potentially deadly, weird dancing is the only defence mechanism this snake will do as it is otherwise completely inoffensive even when physically manipulated as long as it is not restrained for long periods of time. It inhabits moist savanna and wetlands and spends the day hidden in burrows, logs, holes, or leaf litter and emerges at night to hunt its prey of frogs and small lizards and snakes, including its own species. Species: Water Python. Found in northern Australia and Papua New Guinea. Water pythons get their name from their affinity for water, as they are often spotted in or near waterholes such as creeks, lagoons, floodplains, rivers and man-made dams, and they never stray too far from water sources. They are a medium-large snake, reaching lengths of up to 8 ft, and this size allows them to consume a wide variety prey from small fish and mammels to young crocodiles. For defense, water pythons always look to the water for a quick escape route, but if trapped they have a high defensive personality and a powerful bite that can inflict deep cuts. These snakes demonstrate a symbolic connection to the rainbow serpent from indigenous creation myth, where it is believed that the rivers and waterways of northern Australia were created and brought to life by the snake’s vibrant and iridescent skin.
