A religious man recently asked me a question:
Would you want to go to heaven after death? To be there with your loved ones, your family. Everything will be wonderful, and it will last for eternity. It's an interesting question, and by his experience as he described it, even every atheist he'd asked said they wouldn't refuse such a thing β they'd agree to it. He clarified: you don't have to believe in it, just admit the possibility exists, think it through carefully, and then give a clear answer. I didn't think long. I like that much of my life is impermanent. The awareness and memory of death give value to many things and people in our lives. To strive toward choosing a person and building a family, to set right the relationships with your family and those close to you. Do I possess something while my heart still beats β or perhaps not at all? I share warm Boston sunsets with someone, talk about books in coffee shops, enjoy delicious salmon with feta cheese some mornings, train my body, and so on... Yet all of this, like my body, will one day leave me: people will begin leaving my life, or I will leave theirs, the good food, the conversations, the feelings, the sunsets and sunrises... My own will β perhaps the only thing one can truly possess and it is not even given to me at birth. It requires relentless work across an entire lifetime. And yes, my answer was simple. I simply don't see myself in the heaven that man described to me. My true will tells me that I would not want to live my real life with the understanding or belief that something like that awaits me after death.
