During World War II many Ukrainian nationalists got duped into thinking the Germans would help them gain independence and fight the Soviets. That didn't happen. They used them as cannon fodder, then quickly betrayed them, denied them independence, began colonizing Ukrainian towns and deporting them to replace them with German settlers, and then slandered the nationalists as "tools of Jewish Bolshevism". Gauleiter of Ukraine Eric Koch said his job was too "squeeze every ton of grain and every slave labourer he could out of the region!" The treachery here is unheard of!

Georing and Goebbels both admitted finances were in "critical condition" and Hjalmar Schact resigned over the issue. They knew they couldn't pay that down unless they conquered the East and despoiled all of its resources. And that's what they did. In 1942 Deputy Finance Minister Reinhardt said "the contributions that have been allocated to paying off the interest and principal on the national debt must henceforth be covered by current revenues earned from economic exploitation of the Eastern territories".
