Israel is not calling itself the Zionist State nor it calls itself the Judaic State. It defines itself as the ‘Jewish State.’ Jewishness, is not a religion nor it is a political stand. It is a means of identification, accordingly the Jewish State is the state of those who identify themselves as Jewish. Following the ICC’s prosecutor call for international arrest warrant for PM Netanyahu and Defence Minister Galant with the expectation of more Israeli militaries to be added soon, the whole Jewish State is becoming a war criminal suspect and people who identify as Jewish have to make a decision whether they are in or out. I of course, saw it coming over 25 years ago. I realised that Israel is a genocidal state when I learned what happened in 1948. I then saw with my own eyes the scale of Israeli brutality in 1982 Lebanon. I wrote a book about it, trying to warn both Jews and the rest that a tsunami of Old Testament driven violence was coming. I was of course subject to intensive harassment and book burning by both Zionists but mainly by anti zionists Jews. I of course survived it and my book The Wandering Who is attached to God’s favourite children forever. Cont. It took the Palestinians and the region another century to grasp what Zionism and Israel are all about. Gaza has been an open air prison for the last decade, and in prison like in prisons, the most gifted are rising to the top. Whether you approve of the Hamas or not, it is impossible to deny that it achieved all its military and political objectives since 7 October while Israel is marching to its end humiliated, defeated and mostly confused. Iran, and its Shia proxies are also meritocratic by nature. It is the gifted who make it to the top. Iran has managed to deter Israel while surrounding it with proxy forces with the clear strategy to push Jews out a of growing number of areas in Palestine. While Zionism started as a bastion of critical thinking, it has seen its critical abilities evaporating into thin air. It is, actually, the resistance that pushed its most clever to the helm. I myself started to notice this development in the early 1990s. I discussed it at the time with a top Israeli intelligence commander who actually died a few years ago. I asked him, “can’t you see that the Palestinian elite in Gaza are well ahead of us?” his answer was, “naturally, when you are under attack, it often brings the best in you.”

Zionism - an alternative history Zionism started as an ideological and spiritual magnet for the most albeit, very few radical free thinking Jews around the world, people who were committed to the complete rejection of the Jewish diaspora life. Consequently, the demography of the early Zionist settlement in Palestine (AKA Yeshuv) was made of nearly 100% free thinking beings. People who were ideologically and spiritually motivated but also dissenters to their very core. In today’s piece I will elaborate on the shift from the Zionist birth moment as a radical Jewish free thinking adventure to the current tragic Israeli collective authoritarianism that is driven by wall to wall genocidal fantasies. In 1882, 24.000 Jews lived in peace in Palestine. Five years later (1897), in Basel, a group of assimilated Jewish Diaspora dissidents announced the formation of the Zionist movement. The first Zionist agitators were repulsed by their brethren’s culture and vowed to bring to life new Hebrews: ethical, authentic and, most important, proletarians. They believed that Jewish Diaspora cultural malaise could be fixed by means of ‘homecoming.’ Despite being secular and even atheists, they still bought into the ideal that God was a real estate agent and the Old Testament was practically a property deed document assigning Palestine to the Jews. These few early Zionists and their early ideological followers were, in fact, the true cognitive elite of the Jewish people at the time. They weren’t the rich, they weren’t dominating any rabbinical group. They weren’t particularly charismatic, but they were free thinkers, they thought for themselves. They stood up against anything Jews might have been associated with at the time. The beginning of Zionism was indeed promising, but here is a fascinating fact. Zionism was actually extremely unpopular amongst Jews at the time. In 1914, more than a decade and a half after the ‘sensational’ first Zionist congress, the number of Jews in Palestine went up to just 94.000. In short, not many Jews were convinced by the Zionists’ message, in fact, hardly anyone bought into the idea. By the end of WW1 the number of Jews in Palestine actually dropped to 60.000 (1918). It then went up gradually until 1931 when 174.610 Jews were spotted in Palestine. These new Zionist immigrants were very special people. They weren’t just ideologically motivated, they were the hardcore of post-emancipation Jewish critical thought. They were committed to the radical rejection of the diaspora, negating the galut (diaspora), as they called it, and there is a good reason to agree that Zionism, in its first days, presented a new alternative face of Jewish existence. Τhis early Zionist elite practically dominated Israel politically, militarily, ideologically and spiritually until 1977. Amongst those early Zionists you will find the likes of David Ben Gurion, who made Aliya in 1906. Golda Meir, who immigrated to Palestine in 1921, was the Israeli Prime Minister during the 1973 war, Every success of Zionism, including the foundation of Israel, the resurrection of Hebrew society and Hebrew rich culture (poetry, literature) in Palestine, getting away with murder and ethnic cleansing (the 1948 Nakba), and of course, young Israel’s military and diplomatic successes in 1956 and 1967, are all associated with this unique early labour Zionist cognitive elite. But the fate of Zionism was destined to change and the early signs of it could be already detected as early as 1933. The rise of Hitler in Germany and the fear of a big European war pushed many more Jews to Palestine. These Jews, however, weren’t necessarily ideologically or spiritually motivated. They weren’t necessarily the core free thinking Jews motivated by the rejection of the Jewish cultural symptom. They were Jews looking for a refuge, accepting that a disaster maybe inevitable. By 1936, 384.000 Jews lived in Palestine. This was a significant rise. By 1948 this number doubled up 716.000. Cont.

Cont. Many of those were Jewish European refugees who survived the holocaust and were brought to the newly formed Jewish State as cannon fodder . The meaning of it was that the percentage representation of early Zionist free thinkers within the emerging society was reduced dramatically. It, of course, continued to drop in the 1950s following the mass immigration of Arab Jews. The Labour Zionist elite brought all those people to make a demographic impact on the land. They needed a lot of soldiers and working hands, but these soldiers were destined to change the revolutionary Zionist fantasy into a miserable Jewish ghetto, the one thing Early Zionists were desperate to eradicate. Since 1967 we see the rise of different competing new Israeli political forces that reflect the demographic shift in the Israeli society. As if this is not enough, following the exceptional IDF’ success in the 1967 war, world Jewry has changed its attitude towards Zionism. By then, Zionism had become the institutional voice of world Jewry. Even the so called anti Zionist Jews don’t agree to institutionally undermine the existence of the Jewish State. All they want instead, is the Jewish state to be slightly nicer. In practice, they are actually anti zionists zionists. Some of the emerging Israeli political group since 1967 have been ethnocentric (Arab Jews, North African Jews, etc), while others are theocentric (West Bank Settlers, different orthodox sects, etc). Some are both theocentric and ethnocentric, and some are economy justice driven. Yet, none of them carry the nature of the early Zionist critical society. In fact, the Israeli Labour party that has been at the centre of the Zionist project has been evaporated, and it is unlikely that its left over will make it into the next Knesset. Tragically for Israel, as well dangerous to the world, the elite that dominates Netanyahu’s government and is responsible for the current chaos is hardcore, right-wing West Bank settlers hawks. These people are basically the complete opposite of the early Zionist free thinking pioneers. They are proud authoritarian fanatic religious people. They are self loving Jews, and there is nothing they want more than celebrating their Jewishness. Needless to mention, the state of devastation in Gaza may reveal what Jewishness means to them in particular. Zionism that started as an ideological magnet for the most radical free thinking characters in the Jewish world has morphed into the voice of the most stagnated morbid and authoritarian Jews around. We are talking about ghetto-dwellers who subscribe to the most brutal and racist possible interpretation of their religious and cultural ethos. Zionism that started as an intense bond of critical thinking has been defeated by its own creativity. The free thinkers died eventually. Their followers grasped at one point that the project doesn’t really lead anywhere. They like myself and others, drifted out of the country accepting that there may not be a collective remedy to the so called ‘Jewish Question ‘ except individual voluntary rejection. But it is also astonishing to follow the critical intellectual shift within the Palestinian society and within the resistance front in general. Palestinian traditional elite wasn’t exactly a cognitive elite. It was a made of traditional ruling families. Palestinians throughout their history were ruled by others and the role of the Palestinian elite, accordingly, was at large a subservient function, they acted as a mediator between the foreign ruler and the masses. Naturally, the Palestinian elite didn’t have the cognitive, political and spiritual means to grasp Zionism in its early days. They couldn’t understand these strange ideologically motivated people who suddenly appeared on their land out of nowhere. Moreover, the Palestinians had a good experience living side by side with the few Palestinian Jews over centuries. They couldn’t figure out that the Zionist pioneers had nothing in common with the Palestinian Jews. Cont.
