Noun Clauses: • Function as nouns and can play the role of a subject, object, or complement. • Introduced by the relative pronoun "that." Example: > I don't know that he is coming. Relative Adverbs: • In addition to the four basic relative adverbs (where, when, why, how), there are also compound relative adverbs: * Wherever: refers to any place * Whenever: refers to any time * Whoever: refers to any person * Whichever: refers to any thing Examples: > I will go wherever you go. > I will help you whenever you need me. > Whoever wins the race will get a prize. Punctuation of Relative Clauses: • Restrictive clauses: No commas are used. • Nonrestrictive clauses: Commas are used to set them off from the main clause. • Reduced clauses: No commas are used. (restrictive) • My sister, who is a teacher, lives in California. (nonrestrictive) • I went to the store where I bought some groceries. (adjective clause) • I don't know that he is coming. Relative Clauses Definition: Relative clauses are dependent clauses that provide additional information about a noun or pronoun from the main clause. They are introduced by relative pronouns or relative adverbs. Types of Relative Pronouns: • Who: refers to people and animals • Which: refers to things, animals, and ideas • That: replaces who or which (can refer to people, things, or ideas) • Whose: shows possession or ownership Types of Relative Adverbs: • Where: refers to place • When: refers to time • Why: refers to reason • How: refers to manner Functions of Relative Clauses: • To provide additional information about a noun or pronoun • To identify or specify a person, thing, or action • To limit or restrict the meaning of the main clause Types of Relative Clauses: 1. Restrictive (Defining) Relative Clauses: • Restrict the meaning of the main clause. • The information they provide is essential for identifying the noun or pronoun. • Use a comma if they come after the noun. Example: > The students who studied hard passed the exam. 2. Nonrestrictive (Non-defining) Relative Clauses: • Provide additional information that is not essential for identifying the noun or pronoun. • Do not use a comma if they come after the noun. Example: > My friend, who lives in California, called me yesterday. Position of Relative Clauses: Relative clauses can appear before, after, or within the noun or pronoun they refer to. Other Uses of Relative Pronouns: • As a subject: Who is going to the park? • As an object: I know the person who stole my wallet. • As a possessive: The girl whose book I borrowed is in my class. Tips for Using Relative Clauses: • The antecedent (the noun or pronoun the relative pronoun refers to) must be clear. • The relative pronoun must agree in number and gender with the antecedent. • Use commas to separate nonrestrictive relative clauses from the main clause. • Avoid long or complex relative clauses that are difficult to understand. @Ielts_ikarus21
