How to utilize Previous Year Questions (PYQ) of prelims paper? 1. Repetition of questions Questions do repeat directly from the statements asked in the previous years. At least the thematic areas are recurrently asked year after year. 2. Application of common sense Not all questions will be known ones in the paper. Therefore use PYQs to check your common sense level to attend certain questions which can be answered with logical thinking. For e.g., Greenwashing term was an unknown term for me then in 2022. I compared greenwashing term with eyewashing which means doing things for namesake with no genuine interest. 3. Learning from wrong options One should also search and learn on wrong options given in UPSC especially in areas like environment and science and technology. For e.g., Polyethylene terephthalate which was one of the wrong options in 2021 prelims appeared as a standalone question in 2022. Therefore invest time in the options of the paper too along with questions and thematic areas 4. Inspiration and speculation At times we have to run ahead of UPSC instead of running behind it. Based on some PYQs one can predict the lines of questioning pattern and prepare on it. For e.g., 2022 prelims had a question on Tea Board. Therefore one can prepare for other statutory bodies like Coffee Board, Rubber Board, Cotton Corporation of India. Recently Turmeric Board was there in news too. 5. Trends, tricks and clues Of course many students know this. Guessing answers based on the options and certain words in the statements as mentioned here. But remember that tricks are no substitute to your known hard knowledge. 6. Imposing self restraint Every year UPSC deliberately asks 15 to 20 tough questions to make the paper challenging. One should not dwell up on those questions and waste your precious time on it. Over time based on basic sources and some PYQs one should develop a discriminating eye which finds out such erratic questions asked simply to make the paper difficult and ignore them.
