New legislation in Brazil now permits the export of species that were previously prohibited, including Moenkhausia rubra, which was scientifically described only in 2014. It is known exclusively from the Río Juína and Río Juruena in Mato Grosso, Brazil. Wild specimens reach around 7-8 cm, although they may grow slightly larger in aquaria.
This species is unusually coloured, with the males’ striking red back being particularly impressive. Under oblique light from above, the anterior dorsum and area along the longitudinal band also reveal beautiful green iridescence. In our facility, these beautiful newcomers have so far proved robust, peaceful and easy to care for.

Behold! The King, of the Koopas! (For those of you not-so-nerdy folk, that's Bowser from Mario). The principal drawback of many Nerite snails is their tendency to crawl out of the water. This behaviour reflects their natural habitat in tidal marine zones.
Neritina juttingae from Borneo does not share this disadvantage, as it rarely leaves the water. This distinctive species is easily recognised by the numerous horn-like protrusions on its shell and reaches an adult size of approximately 3 cm. In nature, it has been observed that this species feeds readily on dead leaves of fruiting trees, such as longan, mango, mulberry, guava, and ketapang, which it appears to particularly favour.

We have once again acquired these ruby-red jewels from the Río Formiga in Mato Grosso, Brazil. The brilliance of the colors in this little animal is really quite incredible. The alpha male is the most intensely colored. The females are inconspicuously greenish, without red.
A couple of specimens appear to be infected with the harmless skin-encysting trematode that causes "Gold" or "Platinum" tetras. The iridophores in the animals produce an excess of guanine crystals to wall off the parasite, this results in the brilliantly shimmering scales seen in some of our animals.

Numerous attractive tetra varieties and species of Myloplus exist. We recently acquired fine Colombian specimens distinguished by a very broad black body band. At 14–16 cm, ours are subadults; Myloplus aylan exceeds 30 cm. Formerly known as M. cf. schomburgkii “Big Black Stripe”, it was formally described in 2024, honouring Aylan Moraes-Ândrade, the late son of ichthyologists Carine Moraes and Marcelo Ândrade.
Close relatives of piranha, they feed chiefly on plants, fruits, and seeds, and establish hierarchies. In suitably large aquaria or tropical outdoor ponds, Myloplus rank among the most striking large schooling freshwater fishes.

From the Río Orinoco, two species of flagtails are often collected for the aquarium trade, the so-called Redtail and Yellowtail. Both differ in terms of behaviour and body shape, this is linked;
The squat, shorter bodies of S. laticeps are from animals living in slower-moving waters and flooded forest (Várzea). The more streamlined body of S. kneri shows that it prefers faster flowing waters.
The care of both species is similar, and they make large, incredible tetras for larger community aquaria. The inclusion of softened fruit and plant matter aids in preventing the "problem" of the animals sucking on the slime coat of their tankmates.

Before Gerald R. Allen and Norbert J. Cross published the first modern, comprehensive review of rainbowfishes, only 19 species of Melanotaenia had been described in a span of 135 years. Today, 89 species are generally accepted, with new forms still being discovered on almost every expedition to New Guinea.
This rainbowfish is endemic to northern Australia, occurring patchily from the Kimberley region of Western Australia across the Northern Territory to Cape York Peninsula in Queensland. As Australia does not export native fishes, all aquarium specimens are captive-bred. The species is also believed to be established in the Philippines. Although highly adaptable, it is intolerant of sudden environmental changes.

This tetra forms loose schools near the surface, an unusual behaviour for a tetra that appears to leave it vulnerable to predators. However, observations supported by limited stomach-content analysis suggest it feeds primarily on terrestrial insects picked from the water's surface or carried by the current.
The species is most active during the morning and late afternoon. At these times, males display striking black tails edged in red, inspiring their common name through their resemblance to the red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius) that inhabit the same region.
