ਕਬੀਰ ਗਰਬੁ ਨ ਕੀਜੀਐ ਰੰਕੁ ਨ ਹਸੀਐ ਕੋਇ ॥ kabeer garab na keejiyae ra(n)k na hasiyae koi || ਹੇ ਕਬੀਰ! Use of ਨੇ (ne) in Punjabi: ਨੇ (ne) is one of the most important Punjabi grammar markers, and it often confuses beginners because English doesn't have an exact equivalent. What does ਨੇ (ne) mean? ਨੇ is not translated directly into English. It is a marker placed after the person who performed an action in many past-tense sentences. Think of it like this:

Subject + ਨੇ + Object + Verb

Examples ਰਾਮ ਨੇ ਰੋਟੀ ਖਾਧੀ। Ram ne roti khaadhi. Ram ate the food. Here: ਰਾਮ = Ram ਨੇ = subject marker ਰੋਟੀ = food ਖਾਧੀ = ate ਮੈਂ ਨੇ ❌ (Wrong) With the pronouns "I", "you" etc., ਨੇ is not used. Natural way to say: ਮੈਂ ਰੋਟੀ ਖਾਧੀ। (No ਨੇ in modern standard speech.) He = ਉਸ ਨੇ She = ਉਸ ਨੇ They = ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ We = ਅਸੀਂ (without ਨੇ in modern usage) You = ਤੁਸੀਂ (without ਨੇ in modern usage) Examples: ਉਸ ਨੇ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਪੜ੍ਹੀ। He/She read the book. ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤਾ। They did the work. When do we use ਨੇ? Generally, ਨੇ is used: Mostly in the past tense. Especially when someone did something to something else (a completed action). Examples: ਸੀਤਾ ਨੇ ਚਾਹ ਬਣਾਈ। Sita made tea. ਮੋਹਨ ਨੇ ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ਾ ਖੋਲ੍ਹਿਆ। Mohan opened the door. When do we NOT use ਨੇ? Usually not in present or future tense. ਰਾਮ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। Ram eats. ਰਾਮ ਖਾਏਗਾ। Ram will eat. (No ਨੇ here.) Easy rule for beginners Whenever you see:

ਜਾਤਿ ਕਾ ਗਰਬੁ ਨ ਕਰੀਅਹੁ ਕੋਈ ॥ jaat kaa garab na kareeahu koiee || ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਧਿਰ (ਉੱਚੀ) ਜਾਤਿ ਦਾ ਮਾਣ ਨਾਹ ਕਰਿਓ । (‘ਜਾਤਿ’ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣੀਦਾ) No one should be proud of his social class and status. ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਬਿੰਦੇ ਸੋ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥ braham bi(n)dhe so braahaman hoiee ।।1।। ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ) ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧। He alone is a Brahmin, who knows God. ।।1।। ਜਾਤਿ ਕਾ ਗਰਬੁ ਨ ਕਰਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਗਵਾਰਾ ॥ jaat kaa garab na kar moorakh gavaaraa || ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ! ਹੇ ਗੰਵਾਰ! (ਉੱਚੀ) ਜਾਤਿ ਦਾ ਮਾਣ ਨਾਹ ਕਰ । Do not be proud of your social class and status, you ignorant fool! ਇਸੁ ਗਰਬ ਤੇ ਚਲਹਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਵਿਕਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ eis garab te chaleh bahut vikaaraa ।। rahaau ।। ਇਸ ਮਾਣ-ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਤੋਂ (ਭਾਈਚਾਰਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ) ਕਈ ਵਿਗਾੜ ਚੱਲ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ। So much sin and corruption comes from this pride. ।।Pause।। ਚਾਰੇ ਵਰਨ ਆਖੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ॥ chaare varan aakhai sabh koiee || ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਹਰੇਕ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਹੀ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ (ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ, ਖੱਤ੍ਰੀ, ਵੈਸ਼, ਸ਼ੂਦਰ, ਇਹ) ਚਾਰ ਹੀ (ਵਖ ਵਖ) ਵਰਨ ਹਨ । Everyone says that there are four castes, four social classes. ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਬਿੰਦ ਤੇ ਸਭ ਓਪਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥੨॥ braham bi(n)dh te sabh opat hoiee ।।2।। (ਪਰ ਇਹ ਲੋਕ ਇਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦੇ ਕਿ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ-ਰੂਪ ਅਸਲੇ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ।੨। They all emanate from the drop of God's Seed. ।।2।। ਮਾਟੀ ਏਕ ਸਗਲ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥ maaTee ek sagal sa(n)saaraa || ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਹੈ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਹੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਤੋਂ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ) The entire universe is made of the same clay. ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਭਾਂਡੇ ਘੜੈ ਕੁਮ੍ਹਾਰਾ ॥੩॥ bahu bidh bhaa(n)dde ghaRai kum(h)aaraa ।।3।। (ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕੋਈ) ਘੁਮਿਆਰ ਇਕੋ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਤੋਂ ਕਈ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਭਾਂਡੇ ਘੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ।੩। The Potter has shaped it into all sorts of vessels. ।।3।। ਪੰਚ ਤਤੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਦੇਹੀ ਕਾ ਆਕਾਰਾ ॥ pa(n)ch tat mil dhehee kaa aakaaraa || ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪੰਜ ਤੱਤ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਕਲ ਬਣਦੀ ਹੈ । The five elements join together, to make up the form of the human body. ਘਟਿ ਵਧਿ ਕੋ ਕਰੈ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥੪॥ ghaT vadh ko karai beechaaraa ।।4।। ਕੋਈ ਇਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਖ ਸਕਦਾ ਕਿ ਕਿਸੇ (ਵਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ) ਵਿਚ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਤੱਤ ਹਨ, ਤੇ, ਕਿਸੇ (ਵਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ) ਵਿਚ ਥੋੜ੍ਹੇ ਤੱਤ ਹਨ ।੪। Who can say which is less, and which is more? ।।4।। ਕਹਤੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹੁ ਜੀਉ ਕਰਮ ਬੰਧੁ ਹੋਈ ॥ kahat naanak ih jeeau karam ba(n)dh hoiee || ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ—(ਭਾਵੇਂ ਕੋਈ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਹੈ, ਭਾਵੇਂ ਕੋਈ ਸ਼ੂਦਰ ਹੈ) ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ (ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ) ਦਾ ਬੱਝਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ । Says Nanak, this soul is bound by its actions. ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭੇਟੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੫॥੧॥ bin satigur bheTe mukat na hoiee ।।1।। ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ ।੫।੧। Without meeting the True Guru, it is not liberated. ।।1।। Guru Amar Daas Ji in Raag Bhairao - 1128 #Gurbani@LearnPanjabi
