Upstream of the whole “has X candidate done enough to beat Y candidate?” dialectic is basically a gaggle of sweaty DC operatives on either side of the aisle and a few interns on Grok Build, either paying off influencers under the table or deploying bot swarms to signal-boost the question itself as an object of urgent speculation.
The conceit of this system is plain as day when you have laypeople glued to these sorts of “conversations” as though they ever possessed some sort of organic meaning to the individual citizen. Its actual function is just to pump enough synthetic suspense into the question —turd vs. douche, etc.— that a forever-consumptive public stays agitated enough to drag itself into the ballot box on cue.
Whatever happened to “I guess we’ll find out 🤠”?
