| 12 | Shore Power at Eramet Norway Ports: A Step Towards Greener Shipping
Since 1 January 2023, #Eramet #Norway has introduced shore power facilities at its ports in Porsgrunn, Kvinesdal, and Sauda. This initiative is part of the company’s long-term environmental strategy to reduce #greenhouse #gas #emissions and improve air quality in port areas.
Supporting Sustainable #Shipping
Eramet has committed to reducing its absolute CO₂ emissions by 40% by 2035, compared to 2019 levels. This target has been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (#SBTi) and supports the company’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
By allowing vessels to connect to the local electrical grid while alongside, the company expects to reduce emissions by approximately 4,000 tonnes of #CO₂ annually. Additional environmental benefits include lower emissions of #NOₓ, #SO₂, #CH₄, and particulate matter, as well as reduced noise from auxiliary diesel generators.
#Shore Connection Requirements
Vessels may connect to shore power using one of the following options:
IEC/PAS 80005-3 connector, rated at 350 A, 380–400/440 V, 50 or 60 Hz;
Standard industrial 3-phase, 5-pin, 125 A socket, 380–400 V, 50 Hz (the vessel must provide its own connection cable).
To qualify for the environmental incentive, vessels must:
- connect to shore power within 30 minutes after berthing;
- remain connected until no earlier than 30 minutes before departure.
The #vessel must also be capable of shutting down its diesel #generators while receiving power from shore.
#Electricity Pricing
The total cost of shore power consists of:
- Grid charge: NOK 0.50/kWh
- Operational fee: NOK 1.50/kWh
- Energy cost: based on the Nord Pool NO2 day-ahead wholesale electricity market price.
Environmental Fee for Non-Connection
#Vessels that choose not to use shore power are subject to an hourly environmental #fee based on their gross tonnage (#GWT).
The implementation of #shorepower at Eramet Norway’s ports demonstrates the growing importance of sustainable practices in the maritime industry. For shipowners, connecting to shore power helps reduce #emissions, lower noise levels, and avoid environmental fees. For Electro-Technical Officers (#ETOs), it highlights the importance of ensuring that onboard electrical systems are fully prepared for safe and reliable shore power connection and seamless transfer of electrical load from shipboard generators to the shore supply.

| 14 | A flow switch in a 15 ppm #bilgealarm system (#OWS monitor) is used to confirm that sample water is actually flowing through the oil content monitor. If there is no flow, the #monitor cannot measure #oil concentration reliably.
Typical functions of the flow switch are:
- Detects the presence of sample #waterflow.
- Prevents false 15 ppm readings when there is no water.
- Generates a “No Flow” or “Flow Failure” alarm.
- Stops the oil content measurement until flow is restored.
- On many systems, it also commands the automatic stopping of overboard discharge or diverts the discharge back to the bilge/sludge tank.
Typical troubleshooting
If the flow switch #alarm is active:
- Check that the sampling pump is running.
- Verify that all inlet and outlet valves are open.
- Clean the sample strainer/filter.
- Check for blocked sampling lines.
- Inspect the flow switch for contamination (oil deposits or sludge can prevent movement).
- Measure the #flow switch contacts with a multimeter:
- With water flowing, the contact should change state (NO→Closed or NC→Open, depending on the design).
- Without flow, it should return to its normal state.
Verify the wiring from the flow switch to the #15ppm monitor.
Common flow switch types
- Magnetic paddle (reed switch) – most common on marine #OCMs.
- Piston type – a spring-loaded piston actuates a #microswitch.
- Electronic #flowsensor – used on some newer systems. | 684 |
