Clinical features indicating early admission to hospital are: • a platelet count of ≤100 x 109/L
• persisting abdominal pain or tenderness
• pleural effusion or ascites
• mucosal bleeding • lethargy
• enlarged liver >2 cm.

Non-structural protein-1 antigen testing can be carried out from the onset of illness up to nine days following the onset of fever, but is not readily available in most states in Australia and takes several days to get results.Polymerase chain reaction testing for early diagnosis (within five days of the onset of illness) can also be carried out. Immunoglobulin (Ig) M detection can be used for later diagnosis (five or more days after illness onset).
