📈Good morning. Israel’s military encircles Gaza City. Berkshire Hathaway reports a record cash pile. And Bitcoin’s soaring price isn’t enticing crypto day traders to return.
🇮🇱Israeli troops have entirely surrounded Gaza City, effectively cutting off the northern part of the strip from the south, an army spokesman said. Antony Blinken made an unscheduled stop in Baghdad after meeting Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank.
- White House officials say Israel’s campaign has resulted in too many civilian casualties and lacks a coherent endgame, but they’re struggling to exert significant influence on their ally, the Washington Post reported.
- Israel barred its heritage minister from cabinet meetings for suggesting nuclear-weapons use.
Berkshire Hathaway is sitting on a record $157.2 billion of cash, boosted by higher interest rates and a lack of takeover candidates enticing enough for Warren Buffett. The stash is mostly in short-term Treasuries.
🇹🇷Some of the world’s largest investors are taking a fresh look at an unloved Turkish bond market that may prove to be next year’s biggest bright spot in the $8 trillion local debt universe of developing nations.
Few are taking the plunge just yet. Money managers including Amundi and Itau Asset are awaiting further interest rate increases that policymakers signaled may be on the way.
At stake are potentially billions of dollars in bond inflows. If policymakers maintain a 40% or higher rate and the lira remains broadly stable, bonds will become very attractive for foreign investors, Itau's Scott Grimberg said.

📈Good morning. Japan’s top currency official says he’s prepared to intervene in the forex market if needed. The Fed is poised to hold for a second straight meeting. And Europe’s richest millennial gets a half-a-billion-euro payday.
3️⃣🇯🇵Japan’s top currency official Masato Kanda said he’s on standby to intervene in the forex market if needed. The remarks strengthened the yen from close to its weakest levels of the year. Separately, the BOJ conducted an unscheduled bond buying operation as the benchmark yield inched toward 1%.
🇺🇸The Fed is poised to hold for a second straight meeting while keeping its tightening bias. But even ahead of that decision, investors will focus on the Treasury’s quarterly funding announcement. With deficit projections soaring, the plan may see most auction sizes increased.
Speaking of which, US government debt was once among the sleepiest corners of finance, but with volatility exploding it’s now drawing hedge funds in.
🇬🇧The next UK government will have to raise taxes to a new postwar high as public services need an additional £142 billion a year by 2030—mainly to meet demands of an ageing population—just to keep them in their current weakened state.
- The dismal inheritance awaiting the winner of the general election, expected next year, was set out in a report by the Centre for Progressive Policy. Health, education and welfare such as benefits and pensions alone will require £100 billion.
- Even without the extra spending, the budget deficit will be running at an “unsustainably large” £135 billion by 2030 unless the government lifts taxes.
