Durkheim's Theory on Religion
(Émile Durkheim, in *The Elementary Forms of Religious Life*, views religion as a fundamentally social institution that reinforces collective consciousness and social solidarity.)
Sacred and Profane
The core dichotomy in Durkheim's theory. The "sacred" refers to things set apart as extraordinary, holy, or awe-inspiring—often symbols, rituals, or objects that represent the collective ideals of society and evoke respect or prohibition. The "profane" encompasses the ordinary, everyday aspects of life that are mundane and utilitarian. Religion functions by separating these realms, creating moral boundaries that unite believers through shared rituals and beliefs, ultimately mirroring and strengthening social structures.
Totemism
Considered by Durkheim as the most elementary form of religion (drawn from studies of Australian Aboriginal clans). A totem is an animal, plant, or object revered as sacred, symbolizing the clan's identity and unity. Worship of the totem is actually worship of society itself—the totem embodies the collective force or "mana." This illustrates how religion originates from social life, where individuals experience a transcendent power that is, in reality, the power of the group over the individual.
Overall Theory Summary
Religion is not about gods or the supernatural per se, but a system of beliefs and practices that sacralize social bonds. It promotes solidarity by classifying the world into sacred (collective, ideal) and profane (individual, routine), with rituals reinforcing group cohesion. Totemism shows religion's roots in primitive societies, where the divine is a projection of societal forces—helping maintain order, identity, and morality in modern contexts too.
✅ Electromagnetic Waves Used in Common Technologies
Bluetooth
• Uses Microwaves (2.4 GHz)
• Short-range wireless communication.
TV Remote
• Uses Infrared (IR) waves
• Line-of-sight control.
Communication Satellites
• Use Microwaves (C-band, Ku-band, Ka-band)
• Least atmospheric absorption → clear long-distance communication.
James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)
• Uses Infrared (IR) for observation
• Sees through dust clouds; detects early universe.
Drones
• Controlled using Radio waves / Microwaves (2.4–5.8 GHz)
• Reliable high-bandwidth control signals.
WiFi
• Uses Microwaves (2.4 GHz & 5 GHz)
• Wireless internet transmission.
MRI Scan
• Uses Radio waves (RF waves) + Magnetic field
• Radio waves excite hydrogen nuclei → imaging.
LASER
• Uses Coherent light (Visible or Infrared)
• Highly focused → cutting, medical, defence, measurement.
Remote Sensing Satellites
• Use Visible light, Infrared, Microwave
Visible → land use, vegetation
IR → heat, moisture
Microwave → cloud-penetration, all-weather data
Optical Fibres
• Use Infrared light (850, 1310, 1550 nm)
• Lowest signal loss → high-speed internet.
Radar
• Uses Microwaves (1–10 GHz)
• Aircraft tracking, weather radar, speed guns.
LiDAR
• Uses Laser pulses (Near-IR)
• 3D mapping, elevation survey, autonomous vehicles.
Night Vision Devices
• Use Infrared (Near-IR / Thermal IR)
• Detects heat OR uses IR illumination in darkness.

📌 Durkheim on Totemism —
1️⃣ Why Totemism?
Durkheim says to understand complex religions, we must study their simplest form → totemism among Australian aborigines.
2️⃣ What is a Totem?
A totem = an animal/plant/object believed to be the ancestor of a clan.
It is the symbol of the clan itself, giving identity and unity.
3️⃣ Totem = Sacred
The totem is sacred, not because the object has power, but because:
It represents the clan
The clan represents society
Therefore, society is worshipped through the totem
➡️ Totem = society in symbolic form
4️⃣ Key Features
Members may not be blood-related but share the same totem name
Clan exogamy is mandatory
Totem cannot be killed/eaten → taboos
Totemic emblem is carved, painted, engraved everywhere
5️⃣ Real Object of Worship = Society
Durkheim: People are not worshipping the totem, but society which:
Is superior to individuals
Has moral authority
Demands obedience
Creates collective conscience
Worship = giving society a divine form.
6️⃣ Collective Effervescence
During rituals/festivals:
Whole clan gathers
Emotional unity is created
Social bonds strengthen
Sacredness is renewed
➡️ Religion maintains social solidarity.
7️⃣ Totemism Explains All Religion
Totemism shows that religion =
➡️ Society worshipping itself in symbolic form.
God = society apotheosised (glorified).
⭐ In One Line (For Answer Writing):
Durkheim argues that in totemism the clan worships its own collective identity through sacred symbols, and religion is ultimately society worshipping itself, reinforcing social solidarity.
