Let’s create a structured set of discussion points comparing Strindberg’s Miss Julie with Jungian psychology, focusing on complexes, the collective unconscious, and retrospection. Even though Strindberg predates Jung, his play reflects psychological insights that align with Jung’s later theories.
1. Miss Julie’s Inner Conflicts and Complexes
Observation in the play: Miss Julie is torn between her aristocratic upbringing and her primal instincts. Her impulses, especially sexual desire and dominance, clash with societal expectations.
Jungian comparison: Jung’s concept of complexes—autonomous clusters of repressed emotions and experiences—can be seen in Miss Julie’s unpredictable and intense behavior. Her actions are often dictated by unconscious drives she cannot control.
Discussion point: Miss Julie embodies how unresolved personal complexes can dominate conscious behavior, similar to Jung’s analysis of psychological patterns.
2. Archetypes in Character Dynamics
Observation in the play: The characters represent universal roles:
Miss Julie as the conflicted noblewoman (struggling between conscious social mask and unconscious desire)
Jean as the ambitious servant, a shadow/trickster figure challenging social norms
Jungian comparison: These roles align with Jungian archetypes in the collective unconscious, showing recurring human motifs.
Discussion point: Strindberg intuitively portrays archetypal conflicts that Jung would later describe, such as the tension between shadow and persona.
3. Repression, Shadow, and Projection
Observation in the play: Miss Julie suppresses socially unacceptable desires, projecting parts of herself onto Jean, leading to manipulation, seduction, and cruelty.
Jungian comparison: This mirrors Jung’s concept of the shadow—the unconscious part of the psyche containing repressed traits—and projection, where the psyche externalizes inner conflicts.
Discussion point: The play illustrates the destructive consequences of failing to acknowledge and integrate shadow aspects.
4. Collective Unconscious and Social Conditioning
Observation in the play: Miss Julie’s psyche is shaped by aristocratic tradition, inherited values, and gender roles. Her self-destruction can be seen as a product of these ingrained societal pressures.
Jungian comparison: Jung’s collective unconscious contains inherited memories and instincts shared across humanity. Miss Julie’s behavior reflects the tension between individual desire and ancestral/cultural influences.
Discussion point: Strindberg anticipates Jung’s insight that inherited psychic structures influence behavior beyond conscious awareness.
5. Retrospection and Self-awareness
Observation in the play: Miss Julie occasionally reflects on her actions and their consequences but cannot reconcile them with societal and internal pressures, leading to despair.
Jungian comparison: Jungian therapy emphasizes retrospection, uncovering unconscious content for self-understanding. Miss Julie’s fleeting self-awareness shows an early depiction of this psychological process.
Discussion point: Strindberg portrays the tragic outcome of confronting unconscious drives without the tools to integrate them consciously.
6. Psychological Tragedy as Insight
Observation in the play: The tragedy arises less from external events and more from internal conflicts and unresolved complexes.
Jungian comparison: Jung might interpret Miss Julie as a dramatization of the psyche’s struggle with unintegrated complexes, showing the necessity of confronting unconscious material for psychological wholeness.
Discussion point: The play can be read as an early exploration of Jungian ideas of psychic crisis caused by unresolved unconscious conflicts.

This non-linear progression reflects the complexity of human development, where growth is not a straightforward ascent but a dynamic process of continual negotiation between stability and change.
Furthermore, while Jung conceptualizes the shadow as an internal aspect of the psyche, Campbell frequently externalizes it through antagonists or obstacles. This distinction does not represent a contradiction but rather a complementary perspective. The external conflicts faced by the hero can be understood as projections of internal struggles, suggesting that myth serves as a symbolic language through which psychological processes are expressed.
In this sense, Campbell’s narratives provide concrete representations of Jung’s abstract ideas, making the inner journey visible and relatable.
In conclusion, the influence of Jung’s alchemical stages on Campbell’s Hero’s Journey lies in their shared depiction of transformation as a movement from fragmentation to wholeness. Nigredo, Albedo, Citrinitas, and Rubedo parallel key stages in the hero’s narrative arc, revealing that storytelling and psychology are deeply interconnected. Both frameworks emphasize the necessity of confronting darkness, the value of reflection, the importance of integration, and the ultimate goal of achieving balance. Most significantly, they acknowledge that transformation is not linear but an ongoing, cyclical process. Through this lens, the Hero’s Journey can be understood not merely as a narrative pattern, but as a symbolic representation of the human quest for meaning and self-realization.

Model Comparative Essay
The relationship between the psychological theories of Carl Jung and the mythological framework developed by Joseph Campbell reveals a profound intersection between inner transformation and narrative structure.
Jung’s concept of the Magnum Opus, expressed through the four alchemical stages of Nigredo, Albedo, Citrinitas, and Rubedo, provides a symbolic map of psychological development. Campbell’s Hero’s Journey, on the other hand, translates similar processes into a universal storytelling pattern. When examined together, these frameworks demonstrate that the hero’s outward adventures mirror an inward journey of individuation, though neither process unfolds in a strictly linear manner.
The initial stage of Jung’s alchemical process, Nigredo, represents decomposition, chaos, and confrontation with the unconscious—particularly the shadow. This stage finds a clear parallel in the Hero’s Journey during moments such as the “Belly of the Whale” or the “Abyss,” where the hero experiences disorientation, loss, or symbolic death. In both frameworks, this phase is essential rather than destructive; it dismantles the ego and exposes hidden fears and contradictions.
Jung emphasizes that confronting the shadow is a prerequisite for growth, and similarly, Campbell’s hero must endure profound crisis before transformation becomes possible. Thus, Nigredo is not merely a descent into darkness, but the necessary foundation for renewal.
Following this dissolution, the stage of Albedo introduces purification and reflection. In Jungian terms, this phase involves gaining clarity, reconciling opposites, and beginning the process of psychological integration. Within the Hero’s Journey, Albedo can be associated with stages such as “Meeting the Mentor” and the “Road of Trials,” where the hero acquires knowledge, refines their abilities, and develops moral awareness.
The chaos of Nigredo gives way to insight, suggesting that understanding emerges through struggle. However, this stage remains incomplete, as the hero has not yet achieved full transformation but is instead in a process of gradual alignment with a deeper self.
Citrinitas, often the most overlooked stage, represents awakening and the emergence of a new consciousness. It marks a transition from purification to illumination, where the individual begins to embody the insights gained during earlier stages. In the Hero’s Journey, this phase corresponds to the hero’s growing confidence and sense of purpose as they approach the climax.
Unlike Albedo, which emphasizes reflection, Citrinitas signals active integration. The hero no longer merely understands transformation intellectually but begins to live it. This stage is particularly significant because it highlights transformation as an ongoing process rather than a single moment of change.
The final stage, Rubedo, signifies completion, wholeness, and the unification of opposites. For Jung, this represents individuation—the realization of the integrated self. In Campbell’s framework, Rubedo aligns with the hero’s “Return with the Elixir,” where the transformation achieved through the journey is brought back to benefit the wider community. Importantly, Rubedo is not simply a personal triumph; it reflects a balance between inner and outer worlds. The hero’s journey reaches fulfillment only when personal growth contributes to collective well-being, reinforcing the idea that individuation has both psychological and social dimensions.
A critical aspect of both Jung’s and Campbell’s models is their rejection of strict linearity. Although the stages of alchemy and the phases of the Hero’s Journey are often presented sequentially, real transformation is cyclical and recursive. Individuals and literary characters may revisit earlier stages, confront new forms of the shadow, or undergo multiple cycles of breakdown and renewal.
