Financial Democracy: The Jan Dhan Transformation Why in News? ✅ Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) marks 12 years, highlighting the role of financial inclusion in making economic freedom meaningful. PMJDY: Key Significance ✅ Launched on 28 August 2014 as a major financial inclusion initiative. ✅ Aimed to provide households with bank accounts, RuPay debit cards and insurance cover. ✅ A bank account became an entry point into the formal economy, enabling access to savings, payments, credit and other opportunities. ✅ Zero-balance accounts helped bring people previously excluded from formal banking into the system. JAM & Digital Financial Inclusion ✅ Jan Dhan became the first layer of the JAM Trinity — Jan Dhan, Aadhaar and Mobile. ✅ Enabled a more direct channel for Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT). Progress by July 2026 ✅ PMJDY had crossed 58 crore accounts. ✅ Deposits stood at around ₹3 lakh crore. ✅ More than half of the accounts are held by women.

🔆 National Investment Policy for Urea (NIPU)–2026 📍 Why in Focus? ✅ The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the National Investment Policy for Urea (NIPU)–2026 to boost domestic urea production, reduce import dependence, and strengthen India’s fertilizer security. 📍 Key Highlights ✅ Encourages investment in new gas-based urea manufacturing units to achieve Atmanirbharta in urea production. ✅ Introduces separate fixed and variable cost components, with a Return on Equity (RoE) band of 12–16%. ✅ Provides foreign exchange risk mitigation by allowing conversion of fixed costs into Indian Rupees after four years. ✅ India currently has 33 operational urea plants with an installed capacity of 269.42 LMT. 📍 Need for the Policy ✅ Rising fertilizer demand, import dependence, and concerns over global supply disruptions. ✅ Supports timely fertilizer availability and strengthens India’s food security.

🔆 El Niño & India’s Economy 📍 Why in News? ✅ IMD has warned of below-normal monsoon amid the possibility of a super El Niño, raising concerns over agriculture and economic growth. 📍 Economic Impact ✅ Agriculture contributes ~18% of GVA, employs 46% of the workforce, and supports nearly 55% of India’s population. ✅ Weak monsoon can reduce farm output, raise food inflation, lower GDP growth, and hurt agricultural exports. ✅ Past severe El Niño years: 1972, 1982, 1987, 2002, 2009 & 2015, associated with droughts and rainfall deficits. 📍 Key Concerns ✅ Only ~45% of India’s net sown area is irrigated, making agriculture highly dependent on monsoon. ✅ Low reservoir storage and poor irrigation facilities increase vulnerability to rainfall shocks. 📍 Way Forward ✅ Expand irrigation and water-storage infrastructure. ✅ Promote drought-resistant, high-yielding crop varieties and shift from crop insurance to ex-ante risk reduction through climate-resilient agriculture.

Investment Friendliness Index (IFI) NITI Aayog has released 'Investment Friendliness Index (IFI)' which covers all 28 states and 8 Union Territories and evaluates investment attractiveness across eight pillars. The index is not a ranking exercise; it is to tell the states that there are indicators where you are doing well and parameters where you can do better. Gujarat, Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Goa have emerged as top-performing states in Niti Aayog’s new Investment Friendliness Index 2026.

Draft Amendments to National Food Security Act Proposed by Central Government Currently under the existing provisions of the NFSA Act, Antyodaya Households are eligible to recieve 35 kilograms of foodgrains per household per month. Under the proposed changes, foodgrain allocation to households will be 7 kgs per capita with a ceiling of 35 kgs. Centre's Rationale for the Changes: • Existing flat household entitlement, though meant to protect the most vulnerable, creates intra-category inequity: smaller households get a higher per-capita share, larger households get a lower per-capita share — sometimes falling below nutritional need. Proposed change aims to: • remove intra-category inequities • provide more rational, need-based foodgrain allocation • better align entitlements with nutritional requirements (per-person norm)

Govt. of India is planning to replace Wholesale price Index (WPI) (which is a measure of inflation) by Producer Price Index (PPI) in the next five years. But it has started doing experiments with collecting data and creating PPI. Inflation data (CPI and WPI indices) is also used in Index of Industrial Production (IIP) and GDP to convert some data from real to nominal or nominal to real. [Actually some data is collected on real basis and then increased by inflation to convert to nominal GDP and some data is collected on nominal basis and then inflation is used to convert to real]. So, Govt. has started using PPI (rather than WPI) in IIP and GDP calculations. But WPI will actually be replaced by PPI may be after 4/5 years. There are three types of PPI: 1. Output PPI (OPPI): Measures the selling prices received by domestic producers for their output. It reflects inflation at the factory gate or point of sale before it reaches wholesalers or consumers. 2. Input PPI (IPPI): Tracks the changing costs of intermediate goods, raw materials, and energy entering the production process. It highlights supply-side cost pressures before they affect final retail prices. 3. Service PPI (SPPI): Measures price changes across various service sectors, such as transportation, finance, and telecommunications.
