BTC has dominated for 15 years, holding tight to the top spot. Yet, the battle for second place rages on. $SOL is pulling ahead in this cycle, outpacing other chains with a clear edge. Meanwhile, $ETH lags behind... But a single breakthrough could flip the script entirely 🧵 Over the past year, Solana has grown by more than 400%, while Ethereum has only increased by about 50%. At first glance, it seems like Ethereum is losing ground. Through some research from mentors, I decided to explore what the future holds for Ethereum and whether there are reasons to be optimistic. In the next few months, Ethereum will release the Pectra update. The full list of changes isn't finalized yet, but it's expected to include account abstraction, increasing the staking validator limit from 32 to 2048 ETH, and more. The Ethereum roadmap has six stages, each impacting the overall architecture of Ethereum. These stages, proposed by Vitalik Buterin, include: ➜ The Merge ➜ The Surge ➜ The Scourge ➜ The Verge ➜ The Purge ➜ The Splurge The Ethereum update called Verge could be crucial for its future. It aims to significantly reduce device requirements, allowing validator nodes to run on lighter devices, including smartphones! Right now, Ethereum nodes require hundreds of gigabytes to operate, making it difficult for regular users to support the network. Verge will lower these barriers by simplifying the storage and verification of transactions. The important technology update is the Verkle tree, which reduces the data size needed for verification and maintains network reliability. This is a step towards scalability and security. Verge will also include a multidimensional gas system, making gas costs more adaptable for different operations. This will help reduce expenses and improve the performance of the Ethereum network. The Verkla tree is expected to be in the update after Pectra, in 2025. So, there's no point in expecting nodes on smartphones before then the number of developers and commits. This suggests that the blockchain is likely to impress in the future, so there's no need to spread unnecessary fud. Even though its growth in 2024 isn't very strong compared to other blockchains, Ethereum is actively developing. Future updates will allow you to run a node even on your grandma's phone.
