| 3 |  WEEKLY DEVOTION: 20 JULY 2026 | Do Not Reject The God Who Saved You
1 Samuel 10:17-19 - Now Samuel called the people together to the Lord at Mizpah. And he said to the people of Israel, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and I delivered you from the hands of the Egyptians and from the hand of all the kingdoms that were oppressing you.’ But today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your calamities and your distresses, and you have said to him, ‘Set a king over us.’ Now therefore present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and by your thousands.’
Imagine this – a man has been shipwrecked and is stranded helplessly at sea. For days, he clings on to a plank of wood for dear life. Just when his strength is almost gone, a small fishing boat passes by and rescues him. The man is relieved and very grateful to the fisherman who has saved him and goes on to nurse him back to health. However, as time passes, the man begins to despise his living conditions on the fishing boat: ‘it’s too warm and smelly!’ ‘I’m sick of eating canned food!’ ‘The bed is too hard!’ Then, he does something unthinkable – he decides to leave the fishing boat by jumpingback into the sea.
Now, most of us would consider this man to be completely out of his mind, wouldn’t we? Yet, that was the madness of Israel when they rejected God and asked for a human king. The Israelites were once an oppressed and helpless people under the Egyptian Pharoah. Out of His generous grace and mercy, God rescued the Israelites, provided for them, and protected them from their enemies.
However, Israel soon forgot God’s goodness and rejected Him. Instead, Israel asked for a human king to rule over them. It was an act of spiritual suicide. One Bible commentator observed: ‘human kingship would not result in deliverance for Israel but rather oppression reminiscent of what the people had experienced under Egypt.’ As it turned out, under the rule of various evil kings, Israel spiraled into spiritual and national decline, culminating in their destruction and exile years later.
Dear friends, where is your hope and allegiance today? Who is the king of your life?
Let’s take heed not to indulge in similar madness by rejecting God and turning to the ways of this world. At the end of the day, it is God who holds our future in His hands. He alone is the way to eternal and abundant life.
Let us resolve to depend on God and walk in His ways. God loved us so much that He sent Jesus to die on the cross for our sins; surely, we can trust Him to have good plans for us. It would be foolish to turn away from such a God.
Let us commit our lives afresh to Him through prayer and trust. Put your hope in God. Believe in His goodness and love. Persevere through seasons of doubt. Seek godly counsel and remain in fellowship with other Christians. Amen.

Pray for the World: US-IRAN Conflict
Over the past week, the conflict between the United States and Iran has intensified significantly. The U.S. has continued military strikes on Iranian targets, while Iran has responded with missile and drone attacks against U.S. facilities in the region. The ongoing exchanges have heightened fears of a broader regional conflict involving neighbouring countries.Pray that God would restrain the spiral of violence and open unexpected paths to peace; that political and military leaders would exercise wisdom and avoid decisions that widen the conflict. Pray for civilians—that God would protect families, children, medical workers and all those caught in the midst of violence. Pray that Christians throughout the Middle East would remain faithful witnesses to Christ, bringing hope, compassion and the ministry of reconciliation in deeply divided communities.
Pray For Singapore: The Non-Religious
About one in four Singapore residents now has no religious affiliation. This upward trend has been continuing for more than a decade, according to numbers on Singapore’s religious diversity tracked by the Department of Statistics (SingStat).This increase was reflected across all educational attainment levels. Nonetheless, sociologists note that the non-religious may still maintain a sense of personal spirituality. The proportion of Singaporeans identifying as Christians aged 15 and above dropped for the first time in over two decades. Pray that the church will not be too quick to respond in our usual ways but to be attentive and minister to the deeper spiritual needs within our society.
Pray for the Church: St John’s St Margaret’s (SJSM)
Uphold Vicar, Ven Wong Tak Meng and the SJSM leadership team in prayer. Ask God for renewal and spiritual sensitivity as they lead the church. Pray for the synergy between the nursing home and the preschool located within the village as they collaborate in the nurturing of the young and the care of the elderly.
Pray for Chapel of the Resurrection – Responding To God’s Generosity
We begin a new sermon series on the Book of Jonah, as we learn to respond to God’s generosity towards His creation. Having received His generosity, will we allow God to enlarge our hearts to be generous to those outside our boundaries? Jonah is fundamentally a story about the generosity of God and the struggle of God's own people to share His heart. Pray for ourselves that God may patiently pursue, teach, expose, and form us so that our hearts might finally resemble God's own heart.

Pray for COR members who are unwell physically, mentally or emotionally. Pray in particular for Gong Wooi Mau, Khoo Poh Tay, Janet Lee, Steven Lee, Edwin Low, John Suan, andKhoo Hwa Chiang. | 9 | WEEKLY DEVOTION: 13 JULY 2026 | Responding from Strength
2 Samuel 7:1-2 “Now when the king lived in his house and the Lord had given him rest from all his surrounding enemies, the king said to Nathan the prophet, ‘See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells in a tent.’”
These verses remind us of a very precious truth – that believers can respond to God from a position of strength.
Yes, it is true that we tend to cry out to God more from positions of weaknesses. Times of difficulty and challenge drive us to the Lord. Yet, we must remember that God is Lord over both the good and bad seasons in life. He leads us not only through the valleys but also to mountaintops, still waters, and green pastures. Even then, we can respond to God in these good and peaceful seasons of life.
David was going through such a season of life in 2 Samuel 7. He was living in his new and beautiful palaceand had no wars to fight because God have given him rest. Yet, even in this comfortable state, David sought to respond to the Lord. He desired more of God and to do more things for Him. Specifically, David sought to build a house for God. This was not something God had toldhim to do. It was purely something David desired to do for the Lord.
And there are many more like David in the bible who responded to God not from a position of weakness, but from a position of strength– Samuel (2 Sam 3), the Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8), Lydia (Acts 16), etc. In fact, all the apostles and Paul continued to respond to God from a position of strength! Over the years, each of themhad founded churches and done great things. Yet they continued to remain humble and sensitive to the Lord, always seeking to go deeper and to do more.
Perhaps this might speak to many of us who are doing alright or well in life. Our lives are stable, our walks with God are okay, and things are generally looking fine. May this devotion serve as a good reminder that we can always desire more of God. We can respond from a position of strength. We can always go deeper in our knowledge and understanding of Him, pray for more of His presence in our life, and desire to do more and greater things for Him.

Pray for the World: Thailand
Thai Christians remain around 1% of the population, even after 400 years of missionary work. More than 6,000 of Thailand’s 7,415 sub-districts have no church! Nearly half of Protestants come from tribal groups (less than 5% of Thailand’s population), and not ethnic Thais. A lack of Thai leadership in the churches is one reason for slow church growth. Praise God that national leaders now have a bold goal to reach every one of Thailand’s 80,000 villages and neighbourhoods with the gospel! Pray for their plans: a national prayer network, leadership development, extensive research, community development ministry, all in addition to evangelism.
Pray For Singapore: The Non-Religious

Uphold SJCp and SMS(S) in prayer: ask for greater partnership in the education mission in SMS(S). Pray for more chaplaincyworkers. Ask God to provide resources and stir the hearts of members to engage in the education mission.
Pray for Chapel of the Resurrection – Discerning God’s invitation to COR
COR is entering a season of discernment as we journey towards our Jubilee year. The different initiatives and conversations in the past few years seem to be converging. Along with the important decision on the custodianship of the Diocesan Centre Building, we want to pause and pay attention to God’s invitation for the next phase of our church. Pray for open, humble and discerning hearts that are attentive to God. Pray that we will hold the outcome loosely, not pushing for our own agenda or driven by our fears. Pray for unity in the church as we choose to listen to the Holy Spirit and respond in faith.

| 17 | WEEKLY DEVOTION: 6 JULY 2026 | Listening Well! Hearing Well!
“And he told them many things in parables, saying: ‘Listen! A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell on the path, and the birds came and ate them up.”
Matthew 13:3-4
“Hear then the parable of the sower. When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what is sown in the heart; this is what was sown on the path.”
Matthew 13:18-19
Listen! Hear!
The word listen or hear, appears 18 times in the three biblical versions of this story of the parable of the SOWER! It’s a parable about responsible HEARING! The effect of the Gospel on our life and community (Common life) depends largely on how we hear and respond. Striding to and fro, the farmer carries seed in a pouch and flings it around with his right hand.
Some seeds inevitably fall on the path, some on rocks, and others among thorns. Some fall on fertile ground.
Like the farmer, Jesus and His disciples proclaimed the Good News of the Kingdom throughout Galilee. They attractedlarge crowds.
However, they also faced rejection, hostility, and desertions. They witnessed to all kinds of people. Some resisted. Others received.
The four kinds of terrain represent four different ways of hearing and responding to the Gospel.
In the first instance, the seed falls on the footpath where birds feed on it. Travellers trample over it. The seed is not to blame. The problem lies in the condition of the soil, the heart of the hearer.
Some people hear the Word but fail to grasp it. Their hearts are like in a traffic jam. The seed stands little chance of taking root.
By Monday morning they can’t even remember what the pastor preached on Sunday. They do not eagerly welcome the Word. Nor do they seriously engage with it.
The Gospel can’t sink a root into their asphalt hearts. Satan soon snatches it away.
In the face of cold indifference, we may be prone to despair. But listen to the parable. Be of good cheer. Never give up. Keep on sharing the Good News like a farmer sowing seed. A crop is coming.
We can see a new receptivity and hunger for the WORD in our midst. As we sow, let us also pray for HEARTS to be more receptive and spiritual ears to be eager to LISTEN.
BUSYNESS is one enemy we must resist and eliminate! Singaporeans by and large are always in a rush.
“In contemporary society, our adversary majors in three things: noise, hurry, and crowds (RICHARD FOSTER).
The result? The overcrowding of our souls. We are there but not present. We look but we don’t see. We touch, but we don’t feel. We hear but we don’t listen!
Does this describe you? Will you slow down? Will you ask God to restore your capacity to listen quietly, deeply, and responsibly to Him, His Word, and His Spirit, to family and friends, to people at work, to strangers in need?
You can blame LTA for the crowded trains, but not for the traffic jam in your heart.
Cultivate an alertness for God’s Word through the spiritual disciplines of silence, stillness, and solitude.
Soak in His Presence. Don’t RUSH! LINGER! His voice is not hard to hear. His vocabulary is not hard to understand. (RICHARD FOSTER).
And as we HEAR and RECEIVE, we will taste the POWER of the WORD that He is speaking to us, and that is the only way we can be truly TRANSFORMED.

Pray for the World: Humanitarian crises
While media attention has shifted elsewhere, humanitarian needs remain immense in places such as Gaza, Sudan, and Ukraine. Millions remain displaced, and aid agencies continue to face challenges in delivering food, medical care and protection. Pray for peace and justice in regions affected by conflict: that those who have lost homes and loved ones would encounter God's comfort and hope.
Pray For Singapore: The Youths
As we celebrate Youth Day this week, remember our young people in prayer. Many are looking for authenticity and acceptance. Pray that in a world saturated with information and filled with distractions, they may have discernment to navigate their way and discover the true meaning of life in Christ.
Pray for the Church: St Andrew’s Village
Pray for greater partnership amongst the three parishes in St Andrew’s Village as we serve the schools and the neighbourhood in Potong Pasir. Pray for unity of hearts and synergy for our ministries. Uplift Little Seeds Preschool (Ascension), SA House and the three St Andrew’s Schools in prayer. Pray for the staff and students to hear the Gospel and experience the love of Christ through our chaplaincy ministry.
Pray for Chapel of the Resurrection – Learning from Christ
28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
Pray that we seek not merely to be alleviated of our burdens but to learn from Jesus who comes alongside us in our challenges. Ask for the desire to be transformed by the slow,deep work of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
