Courage in the Cockpit 1. Courage & Sense of Duty
Anecdote:
Captain Smit Machchhar was seriously injured during an altercation in the cockpit while flying from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Despite his injuries, he continued to help control the aircraft and ensured the safe landing of nearly 180 passengers in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
Application:
Courage: Performing one's duty despite fear, pain and personal risk.
Sense of duty: Placing responsibility above personal interests.
Selflessness: Prioritising the safety and welfare of others.
Crisis leadership: Remaining decisive and composed in an extreme situation.
Professional ethics: Upholding the obligations attached to one's professional role.
UPSC use: Courage, duty, selflessness, leadership, professional ethics, emotional stability.
2. Duty vs Self-Interest
Anecdote:
Even after suffering serious injuries, Captain Machchhar chose to continue assisting in flying the aircraft rather than allowing his personal condition to compromise the safety of the passengers.
Application:
This demonstrates the ethical principle of placing public/collective interest above personal interest. It can be used to explain duty consciousness and deontological ethics.
3. Leadership in Crisis
Anecdote:
When an unexpected cockpit emergency threatened the safety of the aircraft, Captain Machchhar remained focused on bringing the aircraft to safety despite being injured.
Application:
The episode illustrates that leadership is tested not during normal circumstances but during crises, when decisiveness, composure, responsibility and presence of mind become crucial.
4. Selflessness & Altruism
Anecdote:
Captain Machchhar endured personal suffering while continuing to act to protect around 180 passengers who were dependent on the crew for their safety.
Application:
Shows altruism and sacrifice, where an individual willingly bears personal costs for the welfare of others.
5. Emotional Stability
Anecdote:
Despite the physical injury and extraordinary circumstances inside the cockpit, Captain Machchhar continued to focus on the safe operation of the aircraft.
Application:
Demonstrates emotional regulation, composure and presence of mind, essential qualities for civil servants handling disasters, communal tensions or administrative crises.
One-line ethics takeaway
“Captain Machchhar demonstrates that courage is not the absence of suffering, but the ability to keep one's duty above oneself when others' lives depend upon it.”
