THE DOING AND NOT DOING ASPECTS OF FAITH — Apostle Arome Osayi The Doing Aspect of Faith Most teachings on faith only centre on one aspect of faith which is the DOING aspect. A careful study of Hebrews chapter eleven shows the dichotomy of the great acts of faith executed by the saints. 1. The first aspect as we have already mentioned is the doing aspect which entails feats achieved by men and women who caused a change by exercising their faith in God through doing things. It includes Abel earning God’s respect by offering a more excellent sacrifice than Cain; Enoch getting translated for living a just life; Noah preserving the human race by building an ark even when no rain fell; Joseph prophesying about Israel’s deliverance and including in his will that his bones be exhumed and moved out of Egypt; the Israelites crossing the Red Sea, the crumbling of the walls of Jericho when the Israelites circumvented it in seven days; men subduing kingdoms, stopping the violence of fire and shutting the mouths of lions etc. 2. The second aspect of faith, which has been muffled by an overemphasis on the first aspect is the NOT DOING aspect. This is quite silent, but it’s as equally potent as the first. It’s the aspect of faith in which people damn consequences, refuse favours, choose pain over pleasure and death over life for the sake of their faith in God. It’s a radical rebellion against rebellion and recklessly going against the grain for the sake of the kingdom. It includes people being tortured and yet refusing deliverance for the sake of a better resurrection; people being subjected to cruel mockings and scourgings and bonds and imprisonments; people going about wrapped in the skins of sheep and goats utterly destitute and dwelling in caves, caverns and holes of the earth; Moses refusing to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to suffer the affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; thereby, esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt etc. The Not Doing Aspect of Faith The NOT DOING aspect of faith involves losing precious things and having to make bitter choices. It’s simply choosing God over everything life can offer. It’s by this kind of faith that the gospel of the Kingdom spread irresistibly through dark and blood thirsty empires, cities and coasts. It is a faith that defied and defeated the rule of atheist tyranny and impossible oppositions the ancient world stationed against the gospel of the kingdom of Christ. It’s the same faith that can capture the no-go areas of the modern world. The DOING and NOT DOING aspects of faith exercised under the rule of Christ is what the creation eagerly awaits!
