One thing that really stood out when I listened back to the testimonials from the last training was how many women said they hadn't come to become doulas! 🤯 Some came because they wanted to understand birth or support women in general. Others came because something inside them simply said a big fat YES! What happened next was different for everyone, but the theme was surprisingly similar. Confidence, connection and trust, which gave them a deeper understanding of themselves and the women they want to serve, whether thats during pregnancy or not. If you've ever felt drawn to birth, women's work, circles, advocacy, community, or simply understanding yourself more deeply, perhaps that's worth paying attention to. Most birth workers are taught physiology (one would hope) some are taught how to navigate the system, law vs guidelines etc but fewer still are ever taught this, and this doesn’t become normalised, we will never truly understand birth trauma.

I genuinely wasn't planning to run another training this year. Then I sat down and listened back to the testimonials. What struck me was what they said about themselves. Again and again, women spoke about healing, authenticity, confidence, sisterhood, purpose, self trust and transformation. Of course we spent five days learning birth physiology, advocacy, informed consent, communication, the maternity system, practical support skills and everything needed to confidently support women through pregnancy and birth. Yet somehow, every group becomes something more than that. Perhaps because before we can truly hold another woman through one of the biggest transitions of her life, we have to be willing to meet ourselves too.
